Backyard: I am in full ageement with you. They were not selling enough replacement parts to make money off the 1693T/A road engine. So instead of trying to meet emmissions with that engine they just quit putting them in trucks.

This spacer plate was the only difference between them?

All I know is what I've read online. I understand the 1693 was derived from the D343 bulldozer engine. I've heard they run different pistons though.

MACK E-6 and 650cat425 Thank this.

AModelCat: I wish I had half of your smarts when it comes to comparing Equipment Engines to Road Truck Engines. About the time I got interested in comparing them both they got taken out of trucks. They all did it,Cat, Detroit, and Cummins. Thanks to California and their Emmision Laws. Equip. engines and Marine engines stayed fairly close. Thanks amodelcat.

    AModelCat Thanks this.

The reason I was told CAT ditched the truck engines was it was a small slice of their total revenue. I don't know how true that is but by dropping out of the truck engine market in the 2010? model year, they essentially bought themselves another 5 or 6 years to develop and refine their emission systems for when those standards took effect in the off-road market.

Big Al? Never seen one. Way before my time. Heard they had a lot of power, wicked fuel economy but broke cranks a lot.

Yes Big Al. The neighbor down the street had one in a 74 White Freightliner COE. I was 23 at the time. It was very wicked as you say with fuel and power. It was the very first crankshaft I ever saw berried in the asphalt. We were running together eastbound on I-10 climing Indio Hill. He was out there showing off you know. Just about at the top in came apart.
