Probably because they were concieved with heavy haul operation in mind...They were durable as hell and worked very well in off road and heavy haul but in a road truck they were kind'a out of place...

I had a friend years ago that did nothing but construction lowbed work and he swore by them.

If you had the right setup the 15's would work fine for on road, but you had to know waht you was doing when buying a truck. The new super 13/18 is perfect in my opinion.

    blackw900 Thanks this.

"Slap the dash and mash the gas" a lot of drivers was using the 15 when that was being said all the time.

I agree wholeheartedly...The best transmissions that they've ever built in my opinion!

I would love to have a 10 or 13 speed with a 4 speed brownie(2 stick) then you have both worlds. I think the only problem would be the weight issue. It's another box but how weight are we talking about ?

Most of those old brownies couldn't take the torque that a modern engine puts out...

I had a Dana Spicer 4x4 behind a 1693T/A CAT in the mid seventies and I had to be careful to roll the throttle on easy with that transmission setup....The input shaft was a little weak for that motor.

My 525 would snap it like a twig if I tried to run it now.

I use to LOVE the way those 1693T/A sounded. The rattling while going through the gears. Now that was a motor that never quit. The downfall was the fuel mileage, if i remember right.
