It ain't trucking, but it's a truck. I retired from trucking after 40 years and went to work at a mine to take me to full retirement. I got a real hate-on for the modern trucking industry and trucks. But then I started missing having a truck to play with. So I found this and got it for $7000.00
1980 L9000. Has 100,000 KM and 1885 hours. 6V92TA Detroit, 335 horsepower with an Allison HT740.
I was going to pull the fire body off it and make it a flatbed to haul my antique tractors to the shows, but everything still works so I decided to leave it as is for now. It was still in service when I bought it.
I just have a blast driving it. Cool to hear that sound again after all the Detroit powered Ford dump trucks I have driven. it accelerates pretty good but it's geared for 60 MPH wide open.

That is very cool! Will be a great toy hauler. Not that big a deal to put in a different ratio chunk. Then you will like driving it even more!!!

I used to dream of an LTL9000. The style,....just....man.
Glad you enjoy the ol times. I often do that same thing. Fund something that brings back old memories and buy it just to run it for a while.broke down plumber, W923 and Star4900 Thank this. -
That's badasz! It'd be hard to take that one apart.

Nice! I believe that is a "long hood" L9000, as opposed to the short hood ones I drove. The whole front fender goes up with the hood. Next to a Mack, the Louisville was the most common truck. Most city rigs were the L8000 short hood, or the mighty LTL9000 road trucks. Didn't see many Ford road trucks, but dump outfits had fleets of them. While I'm not too impressed with the 2 stroke, I like the automatic, and for what you need, it is adequate. Just slam your finger in the door to get in the right frame of mind.
. Huge plus is it's fire dept.maintained, and low miles. Seems sacrilegious, but sadly the back has to go, and could be much more useful as a flatbed, dump, or even a van body, but the back limits it to a fire engine. Inside is really nice, although I could do without the labels,,,have fun, it's one of my favorite trucks, and I drove them all!
BTW, many times the "service horn" didn't work, and I woke up with that reversed Ford insignia on my forehead,,

That's what's great about fire trucks. To buy an old show truck would cost a fortune now, but you can buy these for next to nothing and they are like like brand new! I'd like a hauler or dump truck, but lots of people seem to really like fire trucks when I take it out.
Just gotta paint the front rims and get all the stainless and aluminum polished back up.
I was really amazed to see a Ford that the vinyl dash wasn't all sun cracked, but it was inside it's whole life.
And surprisingly it isn't even any harder on fuel than my pickup.MACK E-6, OLDSKOOLERnWV, broke down plumber and 2 others Thank this. -
Yes it is the longer hood. The short hood was the LN or LNT model. I grew up driving lots of Fords. I also drove a really nice LTL9000 with a 3406 Cat that was a logging tractor turned into a dump truck. Their only downfall, just like the IH S-Line's were the hoods crack around the hood hinges off road. I've repaired many.
For some reason, the area I grew up in loved Detroit Diesel's. The city's fire trucks, even the busses were all Detroit's with Allisons. And most of the dump trucks and loggers ran Detroit's. Was real strange seeing a Mack making Detroit sounds, LOLOLDSKOOLERnWV, 201 and W923 Thank this. -
Thanks. Well I live in the country surrounded by forest, so it's really not a bad idea to have a fire truck parked in my garage, LOLBig Road Skateboard Thanks this.

Awesome truck that would make a cool toy hauler but it is kinda sad to take it apart…..

There’s the first gen ltl with 2 round headlights that is the longest hood they made
Then the 4 square headlight ltl that most people think of
The lt is next with the hood having the fenders attached
The ln has a super short hood and the fenders stay with the cab
And @201 you would be correct
This is the short hood kindMACK E-6, Star4900, Deezl Smoke and 1 other person Thank this.
