Hello all. I'm probably gonna get roasted for this but here goes...
8 years 11 months ago I was convicted of 2 DUIs in the state of WI. I didn't even attempt to get my license back for 6 years. By that time I had moved to IL but was working at an Amazon warehouse just across the border in WI. It was surprisingly easy to get my license back although I did have to take classes.
I also ended up applying for Amazon TOM team to work out in the yard. I got hired! They paid for me to go to CDL school and I passed everything. I worked in the yard for about 2 years and probably moved thousands of trailers, and occasionally took short hauls to nearby Amazon sites.
I took on a new role at Amazon about a year ago. The new position still required me to have an up to date Med card since one of my duties would be to train box truck drivers, but included very little driving.
Due to recent drama in the workplace I am considering finally putting my CDL to use but what I am hearing from alot of recruiters is I am disqualified for either "no OTR experience/recent OTR experience" or because of having multiple DUIs, which honestly I get where they are coming from.
I know there are a few companies that will take you with even multiple DUIs but do any of them take you if you also have "no experience" which in my opinion isn't exactly fair since I have driven combination vehicles on the interstate it's not really "no experience" in my opinion. Is there a way I can phrase things that will sound better to recruiters? Or am I just out of luck unless I can afford my own truck and MC? Also I don't drink anymore

List working at Amazon as local driving experience. Don't go into detail because that gets confusing to recruiters and they'll probably not deal with it.
Might have to go with a Chicago outfit, due to the two DUI's.
There's probably a couple dozen 1099 Chicago outfits that will hire you.Bean Jr., bryan21384 and Eddiec Thank this. -
Try to submit applications online before any phone calls. This way, when you do call, your application will already be in the system.
Some 1099 companies don't have a very good reputation, but they do fill a niche in trucking for drivers that need a 2nd chance.
~
Craigslist has trucker pages where you can find those companies in Chicago.bryan21384 and Eddiec Thank this. -

Look, I'm not going to surgar coat this and take it seriously.
Right now, we have too many drivers, the revolving door is speeding up, the good drivers with good records are going the top jobs and those under them are just cast aside as fast as possible. We have too many trucks in the way of capacity, rates won't be on the rise until there is a house cleaning of the industry.
SO my advice is to wait, unless you have a real reason to get out of Amazon, I would stay where you are at OR look around for local jobs, something maybe like an regional LTL or a P&D job where you can put your yard dog skills to good use.

Are both DUIs 8 years 11 months old, almost 9 years old, both of them? DUI isn't going to make getting a driving job easy, but once it is 5 years or older, it's not impossible to get a driving job.
As @Ridgeline said, the industry is SLOW. THERE IS NO DRIVER SHORTAGE. As such, anyone with a perfect record can get a good job somewhere but everyone with a less than perfect record is having a more difficult time getting hired quickly. A DUI is among the worst things to have on your record, but the age of it reduces it's importance. Once all the drivers with perfect records are hired, then everyone else gets evaluated. Don't psych yourself out of getting hired, it could be companies just aren't hiring everybody that walked through the door like 5 years ago and you are interpreting the no reply as "they are specifically rejecting you for the DUIs" when they are only screening drivers perfect and almost perfect records and that fills up their need for drivers at the moment.Born2win, bryan21384 and lual Thank this. -
