Two people were killed Monday evening when a state truck loaded with asphalt collided with a passenger car that went out of control on a rain-slicked section of N.C. 210 in Johnston County.

The drivers of both vehicles died at the scene, just west of N.C. 50 near McGees Crossroads, said Highway Patrol Sgt. R.P. Hooks.
Hooks said a blue Suzuki driven by Walter Lee Brothers Jr., 43, was heading east on N.C. 210 when it ran off the right side of the road, came back onto the road, went out of control, spun a few times and crossed the center line into the path of the truck.
The truck struck the Suzuki broadside, pushing it off the road and causing it to overturn. The driver of the truck either was ejected from the truck or was able to get out of it and died shortly afterward, Hooks said.
The investigating trooper was not on duty this morning, and Hooks was not able to provide the truck driver's name. The state Department of Transportation, which owned the truck and employed the driver, also could not immediately supply the driver's name. Hooks, who went to the scene Monday, said he noticed that the rear tires of the Suzuki were slick and may have contributed to the accident. The accident remains under investigation, he said.
