With the freightliner smart shift, can you start off in L and then go into D on the go without hurting anything? It starts way smoother in L with a load than it does in D. (13 speed). And # 2, is it ok to slip it into N and coast to a stop? Not at a red light I'm talking about when you're going to be parked. Thanks.

I’m no mechanic, but in my experience the computers in these newfangled auto shift trannies will not let you do anything that will cause damage. For example if you are driving down the road and you put it into reverse and floor it, it will simply beep at you and not do anything. So if you give it a command, and it follows your command, it’s probably ok.

But I’d be curious to see a response from an actual mechanic if my reasoning is correct.

It’s been years since I was in a freightshaker with a smart shift. Both things were perfectly fine.
