Last 2 switcher jobs around here (Charlotte NC), requirement was min of 3 years recent driving. I think, right now, they can be choosy.

As for per diem, companies have been offering it for as a way for you to take home a bit more pay. Personally, I would not take the companies per diem, and just take the standard per diem deduction off my taxes at the end of the year. Right now, it's $52., I believe, per night away from home. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong on the amount.

Per Diem is $52 per day you are away from home for people sublect to DOT hours or service regulations.. BUT only a % of $52 a day.. I am not 100% sure what that is so I will not guess it is best to go to the IRS website and research it for yourself for the true information insted of "I heard it through the grapevine"!!!

Companies can offer to apy a part of your per diem to you each day you are away tax free to give you a few bucks more in your check and to give them a tax break themselves.. If they do you still get whetever the difference is from that original $52! Don't forget to claim this.. I know a few accountants who did me wrong in the past and only gave me per diem for "salesmen" and the like... let me say, substancialy LOWER.... more like $30 per day!

THIS is the STANDARD deduction if you spend MORE than this then you must SHOW RECEIPTS... You do not have to show receipts to claim the basic deduction your logbook will suffice as it is a legal document, you can add up your days away from home from there.

One more thing, You must have a "home".. you cannot live in a P.O. Box.. or in the truck.. if you do you cannot claim this perdiem deduction..

A good starting pay??? Depends on past experiance.. type of job your applying for.. OTR.. reefer, flat, step, heavy haul, van, tanker, ect.. Too broad a list, gotts be more specific..

The comment must have a home is slightly off.

You must be maintaining a home is more along the lines.

Means paying rent, or own a home. Paying utilities and etc.
