    It is two separate violations.

    Brake out of adjustment.

non functioning auto slack, as required by the age of the truck.

True, but I can see where he's coming from. The non-functioning slack is what caused the brake to be out of adjustment, so it really feels like one violation and the cop just wanted to be a dick head. It sucks. Be different if it were a write up for a broken slack and a tail light out.

Edit: Then again, that brake didn't go out of adjustment in one 11hr shift. So it's also a testament to poor maintenance. Doesn't take a mechanic to see one set of shoes is farther away from the drum than the others.

That ticket will only truly hurt if you were put OOS.

Otherwise its just a fix it ticket and doesn't carry much weight towards the overall score.

You can improve the overall score by passing more inspections and time.

But he could, and he did. his job is to find and describe defects not diagnose cause and effect.

Brakes have always been the most frequently found violation forever which is why the Auto-slacks were mandated, and that hasn't removed brake adjustment from the 'top' of the violations found. Might be E Z pickings for the inspector but they are always trained to focus on brakes.

Just like the guy who gets a lamp to light after the inspector found it not working and gripes that it was still written up. It was out when inspected so it was a violation no matter how quickly it is resolved and he is paid to find and record violations.

Like any other law enforcement, there is no 'Quota' but his advancement IS based on performance so they are motivated to find 'things' wrong. I had a driver in Connecticut. Brand new truck and trailer though age isn't always a factor with tankers as they have a plethora of potential possible defects above and beyond mechanical defects.

I know the driver had a smart mouth because after an hour and a half he was written up for no windshield washer fluid. Has to be the most insignificant violation ever but shows that he had to find 'something' wrong.
