I walked away from an $18.75hr when I decided to come back on the road, I now drive for a large company, not the highest paying per mile, but one that has an high average length of haul and as such average 2800 miles a week or better and in fact make more money now than I was at the hourly rate.
Yes I know my last job was 40 hrs a week, I also know I had an hour commute each way, so make that 50, 45 minute lunch each day and that makes it 56.45 hrs so the difference between the two jobs really comes out to around 13.15 hrs if I run out the entire 70 in 7 days... but really it is near impossible, no matter how much people try, to compare the two situations, OTR is a very different world, but at the end of the year, when I sit down and figure out just how much money I made in a given year, it is better now than when I worked there.
My expenses while different are also less, so I am banking more cash than I did at my other job.
Everyone's experience will be different, but different things appeal to different people. I didn't actually come back to driving for the money. -
Hell in my neck of the woods $20 a hour isn't near good enough to a family. If your single that would be good money. But I still wanna make more than 20 a hour.

i agree guy's with boths, but to you kmac if you are finacialy comfortable and set up in life and all you need to do is maintain ,your right. if your like adkhunter and my self and are in a situation where you might have dependents and a wife, who more than likely works if your a trucker to make ends meet, you can't, give all your time for 20.00$ and hour. for me around here twenty dollard after taxes is not much at all,you can't make it.long hours of service and ferry waits and time, nasty trafic in cities,no way .they ask to much and beside if you pay peanuts you get monkeys, from everywhere. the truth is if you organise and unite you can make safer, more profitable for drivers and stop dispatcher abuse. to get and retain new drivers you have to make it worth while, with resonable pay at first and adequate training and support, other wise the roads will be full of monkeys that cant drive.older drivers will almost be put into situations where they might have to start old run and deliveries for less, as well as the new drivers that dont get paid properly.the writting is on the wall every driver i talk to knows it. i dont know why the pay rate in trucking is so low for some drivers, every job in the trucking industry has a valuable purpose from bare necessities to must have's, every bodies purpose is important to someone,so why is it some companies pay like crap and nothing is done about it. this is why it need's to be reviewed in the full extent and fair wage policies must be enacted.safety and the continuence of deliveries is a complicated process and deserves adequate compensation to drivers.
