I was speaking to a mechanic one day and we got to talking about motors and I told him that I thought the Detroit was a good motor for fuel mileage and maintenance and he said that he would rather have the N14 as it is one of the best. So I gather it is a good motor and as far as the Volvo I guess that is a preference of yours. I drive a 2013 and love the ride but I have the Volvo motor and not so happy with that part but that is what company has. If you can get it at a good deal then I guess it is up to you. But I would take it to a mechanic and have it checked out and if possible get a dyno.

I have an '01 770 with the N14 and it has 1.5 million miles without an inframe. Blue Ribbon here in Phoenix has 3 of their 18 trucks with the N14, one which has over 1.7 million without an inframe. Cummins perfected this engine, then because of emmissions, switched to the ISX.
If the truck is in good shape and you have a mechanic check it out first, I wouldn't hesitate, as long as you are not planning on going into California.cetanediesel Thanks this. -
Hell yea! I got a 99 with the N14. Runs great. You can get good used tandem sleepers for $10,000 with the N14.

Motor is good except that tractor is a volvo. Lol. Not making fun we have 1. Volvo has really b ad air leaks from push fittings as electronics can be a nightmare.
