DOT sticker doesn't mean crap...if you don't know better yourself. You'll be with the mechanic when he's inspecting and learning along with his inspection...that's what you're partially paying for. Knowledge and confidence.

What Gizmo said, but I'd follow that up with a "trusted" mechanic, and pay him what he asks, to do a thorough complete inspection (hope you have money left) to make sure everything is as good as it can be.

What you spend now asking him to go over and fault everything is one less thing that DOT can fault you for (pay now or pay later)....leaking oil, air leaks, exhaust leaks, spacers between brake air lines, proper hanging of air lines at back of truck, retro reflective markings (tape and reflectors), headlights, running lights, turn/hazard signals, ABS light system and parts, leveling valve, brake linings, canisters, drums, seals, everything and anything. Believe it or not, I saw a DOT on a company I was looking at that got them for elongated wheel bolt holes.

In other words, ask him to cost you money now...ahead of time so you're paying for the repairs instead of the repairs and the fines....and the points.

It's best to know you're in as good a shape as you can be now. Reduced breakdowns as you're trying to make money, and a better sense of confidence in your ride to perform as you need and want it to.
