i am getting the a/c working on my 2005 western star after not being charged for a couple of years and have everything working
except for the engine fan will not come on when it gets to pressure, and the water valve for the cab will not work,it works to the sleeper but not to the cab i have changed the water valve and solenoid but still does not work. can anyone help?

Even though you posted that very humorous comment in the other thread, I'll try....
The AC needs a pressure switch by the sound of it. You can also test the fan solenoid too though, to see if it is getting a signal to turn on or not.
You lost me on the water valve deal. It's a quarter turn valve, so not sure WHAT can go wrong with those unless they leak.
What solenoid?

put a manual water shutoff on the main hose to know the waters off to the heater- if you have a dash switch to turn the engine fan on use it when ac on, what kinda truck and engine you got?

Would fixing it not be a better solution, both short term and long term? I have seen 30HP vanish when the engine fan kicks on, on the dyno. Between lost power, worse MPG, more wear and tear on components, I'd guess that a couple of quick tests with a decent volt meter would be a better idea myself. Thats all it takes to test the high pressure switch, fan solenoid, and so on.

your right, i was just saying he could do this as a getby measure to keep cool, realy only need that fan on at idle or slow speeds.
leftlanetruckin Thanks this. -
Its the little black tube with two wires, and an air line going to it on the drivers side of the expansion block and to the passenger side of the AC dryer. It shuts the hot water off to the heater core when you move the switch to the cool side on your HVAC control.

How many pounds did you put in?
What are your pressures, high and low?
Is it cooling, or not?
Does it start to cool then blow hot?
does it cool when at 60MPH?
Give us some stats please. -
it is cooling fine as long as i run the fan manualy, the fan just will not cut in when the pressure gets up to where it should. i think it is the high pressure switch or the fan relay but i can not find the fan relay, took it to western star dealer last night and they didnt know either,it is a red dot a/c system and they didnt know too much about it.they ordered me a hp switch and an expansion box ,it will be in tomorrow so i will try that.[ if they put it in and that is not the problem they can send it back] i took it to a cool-it dealer to have it charged so i assume it has the right amount in it, they just did not know the red dot system, this one has a hp and lp switch with 3 wires to each, they had never seen that before

electronic temperature control or just dial?
I have the opposite problem. my fan won't shut off when the AC is on. I do think there is a fan relay. I replaced the high pressure switch. that made no difference. The new high pressure switch works the same as the old at $104. The next thing is the low switch to replace. I have the auto temperature control. that is a problem in itself. Theres no way to tell what the CPU is telling all the different parts to do. My system is supposed to have 5.35lbs, of freon. When it is charged with that amount, the low side is 80-100PSI, and the high side is 200=PSI when the compressor kicks on then goes to 370PSI before it finally cuts off. I have no complaints about the AC on the inside. It is always nice and cool inside.Last edited: Jun 12, 2014

What was the amount of freon they put in? What is the high side pressure when the compressor shuts off? The fan is set to come on when the pressure is higher than what the compressor makes, meaning the freon has absorbed too much heat.
