Thanks again. Think I'll post my question back on another thread... comparing pu's to sa tractors. Because the truck I've described is about as good an OTR tractor drive train as I've been able to find for this type of work. Am curious if can find a M2 112 with little more HP and higher gear ratio like 3.58 or 3.33 that would improve my expected fuel mileage?

Most M2 112 will either have a Mercedes or a Cat engine. I have seen a few with detroits but just telling what I observe. If you are into the sa tractor and sleeper, look for one with a cummins (isx or N14) or 12.7 Detroit or even a 11. litre detroit. Those engines are known for good fuel economy.

Appreciate the insight. Just don't want to go overboard with the truck model. Was looking into more of a medium duty Class 7 or lighter Class 8 to pull stepdeck or flatbed trailer (probably tandem, 12k rated axles) for use in hotshot/LTL type work. Want to balance operational costs with durability. Would probably tag the above described truck at 54k.

No problem. If you do a search on Single axel trucks, you'll find a bunch of ex LTL ones. I know its more expensive but I would buy from Ryder or Penske. You get the maintenance records and sometimes they have trucks that have rebuilt or o/h engines which can be benefit to you as you do not have to shell out the money for that work.Nottoway Thanks this.

I drove an '07 M2 106(Mercedes engine/Allison trans/24 ft box/loaded really light 99% of the time) for five years and usually got 9mpg or so. Only serious problem was the injector lines blowing and stranding me at a customer.

I haven't found anything...must be searching wrong?? Trying to find good used pre-2008 single axle tractor w/ sleeper, 11 or 12 L engine, maybe 10 speed...but unsure what a good rear gear ratio would be...something better than 3.0? Oh yeah, should the trans be an overdrive model?
Thanks! -

Does anyone know anything about the GMC C7500 (Kodiak) truck with the 7.8 L Isuzu. I believe that engine has cylinder liners and would be considered rebuildable. What is the tallest rear end gear available in it? I know it can come with a 9 speed transmission. Any idea on fuel mileage? Suitability as a hotshot road tractor?
