I'm in the process of purchasing a truck for my roll off business. Here are the stats:
2007 Peterbilt 357
Cat C15 ACERT freshly rebuilt (MXS serial twin turbo)
18-speed
600K on the chassis
I have heard some sketchy things on the motor depending on the serial but apparently this is a 2006 engine with the MXS serial prefix. I have heard this is good but I have also heard the ACERT twin turbo engines are not great. Is this a risky purchase? So far the seller has been very forthcoming with everything and has agreed to drive it about 20-30 miles to the Pete service center so they can do a complete inspection for me; at my expense of course. That means a lot to me. My current truck (2005 Mack Granite CV713) has been an absolute lemon though so I'm a little gun shy. Thanks for any advice.

I will clarify the truck is supposedly a 2007 with a 2006 build date. The engine build date is also supposed to be 2006. Apparently this truck does not have a DPF.

A stock MXS should not have a DPF. The SDP was (to my knowledge) the only CAT on-road 15L with a DPF.

I wouldn’t hesitate to buy a truck with that engine.

The CAT ACERT was their solution to emissions before they stopped putting engines in truck. That why I has two turbos. You could call Pittsburgh Power when the are on satellite radio show they answer questions for free. I think they are still on Kevin Rutherford now internet radio show they answer questions not sure if it’s free but I see Let’s Truck on Facebook and he seems to now be put his show out for free to listen to.
I think most would take that CAT ACERT today over regular emissions engine today. Probably not as good at 3406 CAT back then but you can’t get CAT engine anymore. -
