    Hello guys

    I have a 2007 volvo vnl

Side rails underneath the cab and engine bay looking good but at the front drive axle ,passenger side on the side rail (3-4 square inch area i guess, center section on rail) looks and it is thin after i knocked off all the rust with a hammer

and i found a spot in that specific area where the screwdriver goes through the rail if i hit it hard enough

    Obviously weakened

Any ideas how to fix it,reinforce it somehow?

    thank you

    Szilard

No way around it, it will not be a cheap, easy or quick fix.

To do it right you need to replace the frame rails. I've personally never done it but they don't need to tear the truck down to do it. They support all the main components, unbolt the old rail and slide it out.

Well, not so fast, AModel, sounds like this person is describing those rust "tumors" on the side of the rail. I believe the strong point is the top and bottom of the rail, not the side so much. Living and trucking in the north, practically every older truck I drove had those rust tumors, and none ever broke in half. Under the 5th wheel is a particularly bad spot. My Western Star conv. cracked a frame rail, a place put a smaller channel piece inside the original frame rail, bolted and welded, didn't last long. So I had the WS frame and spring ride cut off behind the sleeper, and had a Pete air ride stub grafted in place. They also used smaller channels, but much longer, bolted, welded, never had a problem. Replacing entire frame rails is a major job, and on an older truck, might not be worth the hassle.

Glove it. Not really a big deal. Just time consuming

That s what they are trying to do,i guess.
Insert another C frame from inside from tail to the sleeper

    Thank you Big Road

This is a close up photo

More dramatic of course, can see how the metal was eaten away by rust in that spot

Cutting out that part or cut the whole rail?

I know replacing both rails would be the best option or replacing the truck.I know that, but i don't have the funds

    Oxbow Thanks this.
