Hi all, I’ve got a truck that has me stumped and looking for some help!
I am NOT a mechanic, I can turn a wrench and do simple stuff but the more complex stuff I have a mobile mechanic do, he knows more than I.

I have a 2009 isx with dpf. The truck is a spare, probably less than 5k miles the last year. Recently we have started using the truck more but are having issues with it. We have owned the truck about 3 years. It has just under 900k on it. Engine history is unknown but was told the dpf filter was replaced at 700k. Truck has just over 30k hours.

Recently the dpf light comes on. Had mechanic look at it. He runs a regen and when done no check engine lights on but dpf light is on. Computer says soot level severe. It seems like temps aren’t getting hot enough for the doser to start adding fuel. Truck runs fine otherwise so not sure what to do.

Any suggestions? Or where to start? We don’t want to throw parts at it and pray that it’ll fix it, as that gets real expensive real fast.

    Thanks!

The early pre DEF ISX had issues and updates to the 7th injector/ fuel doser either getting clogged or just not dosing correct. Higher mileage units can always have DOC face plugging which will also cause low DPF temps and frequent or decreased regen intervals. These are the 2 spots I would focus first.

If you get your guy to hook up with Insite see if you can share a fault code list and regen history reports. Thats what we need to see to get dialed in.

The 7th injector has already been replaced, tons of carbon buildup. The dpf/ doc have been pulled. Doc has a little soot on the Inlet side, but doesn’t look too bad. Is there a way to test the doc? Next time mechanic is out can have him pull code history. Seems like something is causing it to not get hot enough. It ran its forced regen for over an hour and temps didn’t get hot enough. I know these motors are very finicky. Just trying to see if we can keep it running for a bit linter before its replacement is in.

DOC and SCR. The C stands for Catalyst just like with a catalytic converter on a car. There are precious metals such as platinum and palladium that react with the gases. The reaction causes the increase in temperature. These come off and wear out over time eventually setting a code. It may be that it's time for a new DOC. But first check what @Goodysnap advised to do.

When we first got the truck we kept getting some codes but either it went away or it wasn’t throwing codes/ lights
There was a doc face plug code but they went away.

I’m wondering if the computer is thrown on it if these codes will come up again. Could be possible that they just replaced the DPF. And not the DOC. I just looked, those docs are pricy!

    Please share ESN.

Can you tell me are the DOC and inlet canister 1 piece or separate?

Were maintenance and DPF resets performed with Insite when the cleaning was done?

If you have the last ecm update, face plug error will not show an amber light and will reset after 12 hrs. During faceplug error, fuel map is leaner and egr is off. 12 hrs of better throttle response and improved mpg. Insite will show the temp on the three sensors on the filter. Check temps after engine cold overnight with key on but don't start. If the #2 temp sensor reads low the ecm will throw errors. If the dpf pressure differential is high after parked regen, remove dpf filter and blow reverse direction with a leaf blow to remove ash. (not soot) The filter is just a device and not that hard to understand. Having Insite is a big help. Not having is driving blind. True faceplate error means something bad has happened to the engine.

I bought this truck for the Corps of Engineers when I worked there,2008.
The KW dealer said never let it idle, but if you do have to,run it at high idle.If the filter light starts coming on,take it out on the highway and run it hard.I retired from the Corps in 2017,they still have the truck, still running good.

I myself do not have insite, I belive my mechanic used jrpro or something like that. After doing some research It sounds like you can’t reset stuff correctly with the non oem software. That could possible be the issue? Not sure if it has the latest Ecm update, I do belive that it was updated in the past 1-2 years. Like I said this truck is a spare so it just sits.
