hi George this is Charlie, I checked my timing gears they are fine, on a run my engine started regen every 200 miles so I called several Volvo shop I was advised it could be clogged egr pressure sensor. I finally got a egr sensor value to low. This sensor is mounted on the upright tube after the egr cooler it has 2 venture tubes in the mounting block that get plugged . givs false reading to computer. I replaced tube and sensor, its upgraded with larger tubes to prevent clogging. The egr was choking off the engine opening to much. So now no more chugging or bucking hav my power back . This cost me 140 for the tube 175 for sensor. I would at least check the venture tubes for clogs.

I have replaced EGR pressure sensor not long time ago and everything is ok with it. I had bad injectors and cups. Have replaced them a week ago and for now everything looks to be back to normal. My engine was overhauled by Volvo dealer 300k miles ago and they put all latest update for this engine. Have not checked timing gears!!!

check the harness and codes i had one do exactly this surging d16c and this was the problem the wires for the boost sensor where it feeds back into harness it had rubbed through on the blue twisted wires for the crank sensor.. this occurs when going uphills or using boost (powering on) because the boost sensor receives power and sets off the crank sensor which causes these symptoms what you can try to diagnose this is, unplug the boost sensor and go for a drive and see what it does, or give the wires for the boost sensor a good tug and pull and see what it does
