My advice ask around where you live for a local shop don't go to any dealer the guy that did mine was a master tech at gator and opened his own shop.

Just a little high? Try way to ####ing high.

An extra few thousands and our O/O OP here can have a fresh rebuild on that engine.

To OP- don't you dare do it, a head gasket job isn't what you would call cheap but it sure as #### on a dead corpse isn't $12k. Walk and find another shop, even if it means your burn coolant for a bit and put strain on that dpf, you walk. RUN.

Thanks alot! I was stressed when he told me 12k. Ive only been having that loosing coolant problem for about 3 weeks. But i have been running heavy and lots of miles in the heat in the southwest region. However i dont want to have a breakdown if i push it. Im actually loaded now and have to give back the load.

If i can get this blown head gasket taken care of for 6-8k i would be fine with paying that and getting back on the road. 12k would set me back pretty hard especially the downtime for what would be like 2 weeks.

I will definitely take it elsewhere then. Ironically that repair shop has a huge sign that says "honest fair prices" in the front of their shop.

If he's seriously only diagnosed a failed head gasket, $12k is outrageously high. For real, $12k is in the realm of rebuild costs.

If you're losing coolant with a dpf engine you need to take heed with plugging that. Pneumatic + thermal cleanse is about $1k plus 24-48 hours down time. Coolant burn into dpf will precpaitate this as a necessity very quickly. As a side note this needs done about 200-250k miles regular interval.

While you have your truck in for a gasket job have them clean the 7'th injector and check the dozer valve.

Well the speedco oil analysis says i have indications of coolant in my oil. My coolant goes low pretty fast, and with that mechanics diagnosis i was certain it was a head gasket. Im taking it to freightliner and having them look at it. I think the coolant burn into the dpf is what is giving me a MIL light and code eec 61 spn 4364. Yes i think the doser would need to be looked at as well. I figured if they are gonna do a head gasket might as well have them look/check everything

Are they sure it is a head gasket and not a scored liner? Also your 4364 code is an NOx Conversion Efficiency Low fault.

The mechanic says he's 100% sure its a head gasket. He isnt a commercial truck mechanic but a diesel mechanic. He has worked on them before. Im having freightliner look at it tomorow, hopefully it isnt too expensive and i can get back on the road.

Hey just to update you guys, i feel so relieved it wasn't a blown head gasket! The 2nd shop i took it to found it to be a bad egr cooler, ive never felt so good to see a 2700 dollar bill in my life. I made 2900 the last week of driving minus fuel so i'll just take it as a smaller loss than what i originally thought was going to he 7-10k. Hope thats all they find

    Thanks for the help guys!
