The only way I can see the hinges being damaged by the bird perch mounts is using the single bolt mount and it loosening or using sae bolts instead of metric which could damage the threads. I doubt you would be able to get a letter from Freightliner allowing the use simply because they don't give a darn about drivers communications ability. If they did they would install a system in their trucks that worked properly to start with. Just out of curiosity does your fleet manager have much over the road experience as a driver?
-
You ought to be able to use the back of the cab for whatever "real" antenna that you want, as long as you install a downward-facing element as well, and feed the entire thing as a dipole. That should help make up for the lack of a built-in counterpoise ("ground plane") on that cab.
Take a look at this thread (caveat: pack a lunch before you start reading):

73slim6596 Thanks this. -
Tell him you'll sign a letter accepting all costs to repair if your antenna does any damage. Is he against ANY antenna on the mirror bracket? If not, I'd put 7ft top loaded fiberglass on there and hope he won't notice. Combat his anti CB stance from a safety stand point, he might listen then.

No antenna on the mirror at all. Going to get a 7' Firestik on the back and be resigned to less than optimal performance.

I 80 exit 70.
I got the mount and Predater there too, works great -
I'd remount it, if Your other company trucks have it, he's bound to forget he singled you out.
Plus a good CB is a good thing -
I've already got the bird perch mount and have my Monkey Made mounted on it. It seems to do ok. Not sure what my SWR is bc I don't have a good box to read it with.
I really need a better heavy duty assembly/stud because that MM is very long and bulky. Too much strain on the joint. An ice storm and I'm afraid it'll snap. -
I just found out it was a guy in the shop who saw it, took pics, and emailed them to the director of fleet maintenance. This boss won't forget, especially when he has a snitch in the shop.tucker Thanks this.

That sucks, so many trucks have that mount, and a good CB saves so much time as in going around traffic delays or warning you of whatever, I'd call someone big and plead my case
