I'd rock one in a daycab but no way would a new tuck price be worth it when a 20k truck does the same job.

A few years ago ERF was part of German MAN that is part of Volskwagen that was trying to buy Scania in their quest to be No 1.....
Bad thing about no1 is (((GM)) example is that cannot keep the quality to long....in their push at selling(((share holders wanting more %%%%%)))

Not sure if ERF ever became part of MAN or VW , I thought paccar bought them, maybe I'm wrong . I'm in full agreement with you, you can see it today with most trucks, quality is declining in order to get more profit, trucks are no longer built to last, they are building them with large fleets in mind where they will be replaced every few years, Scania is a good example, their mid range trucks are built to be competitively priced, and as such they are crap! The v8 range is seriously expensive, in some cases up to 40% more expensive than other makes for a tractor but what you get is old school engineering, complete engine after treatment so no egr, dpf etc, they will plod on for 20 years no problem, plenty of them around to prove it too. Volvo is a truck I've had great experience with over the years however wiring has become an issue in recent years, Mercedes too, once they were a really tough truck, not much in the way of luxury but very reliable, not so in recent years. DAF were good before paccar came along, when they introduced the ATI back in the late 80's they were never the same again. Old Iveco turbo stars etc were a good machine, rubbish now too. MAN the same. Those old ERF's were a good truck, rough as hell to drive but very reliable pity they phased them out, they had a cummins engine which usually outlasted the cab! So yeah, big business ruins trucks

Used to drive for good co. close to Valencia, Spain all europe mostly Itally, we've had to 2 ERF ((N14 and S 60, 12.7L detroit)) they used mostly Man tga, scania L460, some Actross.... (((11 years since i left and went just once to visit)))) 1st i've seen US engines there besides the ocasional T2000, Freightliner classics, brought used from here ..

Good ol times.....getting older now....but i would have really liked to see Volvo on this case that they are here already bring some of the COE european design.....putting just a bit larger sleeper, i' d have had one....
Read somewhere that by 2017 engine new GHG rules there a discusion here to cut down the EGR's...

Peabody bought ERF. He also owned western star. Western star was sold to Daimler. ERF was sold to MAN. At that time ERF used their own cabs on the heavy trucks, steyr cab on light trucks. Mainly cummins engines, but they also used detroit, cat, gardner and perkins.
Later they used MAN cab with choice of cummins and man engine. Stll later only man engines (ERF was then basically a rebadged man) untill they stopped to exist.

    Foden was bought by paccar.

Looking at modern conventional trucks, they're starting to tuck the engine under the cowl similar to late model pickups. Add in all the garbage they're hanging on these engines, routine maintenance becomes a major pia. A cabover starts to look more attractive in comparison to a poorly executed conventional.

Planned obsolescence suits the purposes of the EPA and its counterparts across the globe, as they tighten the regulations governing emissions. They need current production vehicles to be removed from service sooner as regulations continue to evolve.
