I’m not unhappy with a rig resonant on frequency.

    2.1 isn’t unusual or “bad”.

Sure. I’d be happy to try something else. Looking forward to how you do it.

As in? SWR isn’t a problem.

The whole thing is an experiment. As said, work in progress. I’m happy to take suggestions. As of now, I have the basics in place to try other radios or antennas or whatchees.

I’m miles from where I started.

Decided to leave San Antonio. Head north to FTW. Rode east on IH10 out to the 130 Toll Road (bypasses IH-35N with 85-mph speed limit.)

I listed to Crackpot Cornpone from his base in SA (a good one, irritating as he is) the 27-miles east till the left hand turn. Picked him up a few more times (air miles likely the same).

Caught the I35 traffic a few times from 20-miles east.

And jabbered with a few other drivers in the IH35 25-year re-construction project now down to the area near Fort Hood once back on that road well north of #### town (Austin).

Ahead and behind by a few miles wasn’t a problem. Once the sun was really down and gone I had to back off the RF gain.

A decent start. I don’t doubt it can be better, Craig, and there’s more to come. Thx.

And, thanks, MeteorGray, I did have an insulator throwing me off. It was resonant above the target. Meaning about a nine foot antenna would have gotten me what I wanted.

The ground plane approach has been fun to try.

And though I may not have mentioned it in this thread, I still have my Dodge Cummins to do, and a 35’ all aluminum travel trailer. I’ve wound up with all kinds of odds, ends and pieces over the years. Just maybe some of it will come in handy again.

You bet some of that junk will come in handy. I find myself using stuff that I originally bought a couple of decades ago for some long-forgotten projects.

About the SWR, I've seen charts showing a 2.0 would equate to about a 10% watts-out-of-the-antenna penalty compared to about a 4% loss at 1.5; so about a 6% differential penalty. Not that much.

However, I believe that little Italy amp specifies 1.5 as a preferred SWR ceiling. I'm sure that short conversations would be no problem, but they do tend to heat up sometimes.

    Slowmover1 Thanks this.

    Thanks.

It’s now on the dash. Won’t be hard to keep track.

IIRC, “resonant “ and about 2.0 not problem. 100W give or take, 6% won’t matter. Hell, 6% of 60 won’t.

I’ve no idea what all the West Coast antenna and mirror mount pieces are good for, but there’s bound to be something.
