Just spoke to my accountant and then the new 2018 tax changes the per diem has been eliminated. Anyone filing jointly will get a deduction of $25,000. Sounds like we will be paying more in taxes. So buckle up guys save your money taking away the per diem really screws truck drivers and any other occupation that has to be on the road everyone loses per diem.

This post is short on a lot of pertinent information and the term “per diem” seems to be misapplied. What is lost is the ability for EMPLOYEE DRIVERS to itemize non-reimbursed job/travel related expenses that were filed on Form 2106. If your employer offers a Per Diem payroll plan, then the driver can participate in this to offset some of the lost deductions but these plans have negative impacts elsewhere and later.
Given the higher standard deduction, only the hardcore employee OTR drivers will be hurt financially with higher tax bill. (Drivers who stay out more than about 300 days a year and can’t participate in a per diem plan)Last edited: Aug 10, 2018
