For all of you with a 2020 or newer Volvo VNL I finally found a fix for the idle shut down. It will only idle in temperatures lower than 34°F and higher than 74°F. I am currently in Ohio right now and it’s 73° too hot (in my opinion) for the windows to be open and I have bad allergies. I did extensive research about how to hack the truck to keep running and watched a bunch of YouTube videos on how to keep it running but nothing was working. I finally realized I had to go to the source of the temperature input which is the ambient temp sensor located in the center of the bumper just under the ac condenser and intercooler. I popped the sensor out of its rubber housing and cut some of the taped wire loom back (about 3”) I then pushed the sensor up in between the intercooler and condenser and is a snug fit. I haven’t had it fall out on me yet and when idling it reads between 85° and 98° While driving it reads close to accurate temps due to the air flowing past it. In the winter months I will put it back in its factory location just so I know when it is actually below freezing temps. Hope this helps! Stay safe out there drivers.
This is where stupid things from drivers cause damages. You are going to cause an abrasion hole in the condenser or IC or both. If you were my driver you'd get fired for this vehicle tampering. ... (Which I could see the idle time from the office) ... Now if you wanted to fool it electronically you could change resistance values without damaging the truck.. Just saying..
I hope like hell you dont work for a company. That's going to get you out of a job. If it's your own truck that's one thing. Do you. If it's the company truck, when you go to the terminal for a pm, they will see that, and you're going to have all kinds of problems potentially.
Yes I own my own truck. I will watch for abrasion and can always move it so somewhere else warmer that is not in contact with anything. The other morning at 1am I needed a solution and didn’t have tools so that was my solution.
Yea, I hear you..my Volvo was set the same back in 2013. The fix is get aTech to burn the eprom with no fuel saver on the ecm, tune it for full torgue and high rpm so you can climb hills....and run with the big dogs. Hammer time!
As low as $150.00 dollars to upgrade and reprogram the ECM. note, they are always sending updates to new VLN on board computers to dealers. My suggestion is call your local dealer and schedule an appointment so you can drop off the truck and wait for it or pick it up the next day while on home time if Volvo Trucks is near the house. Otherwise, a Diesel Tech with passcodes can do it for about the same price.
