Preface to thread: when I refer to my truck's engine stalling in this thread, I mean that the engine stops running.
‐---------------------------------
When my truck is parked, and I first turn on the truck's engine, sometimes my truck's engine will stall within the first five seconds of when I turned the truck's engine on. My truck's engine never stalls while i am driving. This problem only happens intermittently. When my truck is parked, and I turn on the engine, sometimes the engine will stay on.
I have thought about this problem extensively. I have some ideas about diagnosing this problem that I just deduced. Nobody told me about this. So my ideas might not be correct. But this is how it seems to me.
Here is my hypothetical scenario:
Let's say my fuel tanks are half full with fuel. When my truck is parked, and I turn on my truck's engine, and the engine stalls, if my fuel gauge drops to zero (even though I have half of a tank of fuel in my fuel tanks), then the cause of my truck's engine stalling is probably an electrical problem.
When my truck is parked, and I turn on my truck's engine, and the engine stalls, if my fuel gauge keeps showing I have half a tank of fuel after the truck's engine stalls, then the cause of my truck's engine stalling is probably not an electrical problem.
Do you agree with my ideas of how to diagnose this problem?

What is the truck, what make and model? If you're able to check the diagnostics of the engine via the dash, check and see what codes you have. I recently had one in my Volvo for crankcase pressure sensor. It would do something like what you are describing. My truck will shut off, and then I just restart it and it's fine. But I do have it at the shop right now getting some work done to it and probably going to have them replace that sensor while it's there. Does any protection like a big red stop light come on, on the dash when this happens?
Doesn't sound like a fuel gauge related problem. If you have fuel that is getting to the engine, it doesn't matter if the fuel gauge even works.Rideandrepair and expedite_it Thank this. -
Of course, my truck's engine stalling is not CAUSED by the fuel gauge.
What I am saying is that I could maybe DIAGNOSE the problem of the engine's stalling from looking at the fuel gauge or other gauges like the water temperature gauge or engine oil pressure gauge. My logic is that if the gauges still work when the engine stalls, the truck's electronics are probably working properly. If the truck's electronics are working properly, then it is probably not an electrical issue causing the engine to stall.Last edited: Jul 19, 2024

The only warning alert I have on the dashboard right now is "Active brake assist not available."Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Did you recently changed fuel filters before the intermittent stalling occurred? When it stalls can you restart it immediately? Each time in the past that the engine has stalled how long time had truck been sitting ? Is this a DD13 or DD15 engine? Is this a GHG17 to Gen5 engine? If you would post the last six digits of your VIN it would easier to get more accurate information on troubleshooting. Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link (DDDL) has a test routine called the Fuel System Integrity Check (FSIC) that is used to help solve fuel related problems. My sense is to proper diagnose this you need will need Diagnostic Link and access to service literature. A reputable Detroit diesel shop may be the most economical solution.

I don't know if I have a DD13 or DD15 engine either.
I did not recently change the fuel filter. I got a Basic Periodic Maintenance inspection of my truck a month ago, and the mechanics might have changed out my fuel filter a month ago.
The truck had been sitting about one hour each time it stalled in the past.
But my purpose in creating this thread is not really about "how do I fix my truck". The mechanics will repair my truck. My purpose is to learn about how to diagnose the problem of why the engine stalls. I am just asking the question of the OP to satisfy my curiosity. I made a logical deduction about how to diagnose this, and I am curious if I am on the right track.
Am I correct that if the fuel gauge, water temperature gauge, and oil pressure gauges drop to zero when the truck's engine stalls, that it is likely some sort of electrical problem causing the engine to stall?Last edited: Jul 19, 2024
