If you do need extra capability, get an extra axle and get it to lift.

There's a huge difference between permitting some weight on a tandem and buying a tridem trailer regardless as to whether it has a lift axle or not. If you're chasing that 55,000# and over freight then a tridem works BUT I don't think the additional cost of an axle and the additional weight of an axle is what the OP is looking for. I am betting he has an aluminum trailer now because that's what the market dictates in his market place.

Just go big. Get the 30k axles and be done with it.

If you see the other thread (fontaine revolution....) I am in fact speccing out three different trailers:

    53 flat tandem
    53 flat tridem
    53 step tridem

Weights are completely off of what they should be, so the dealer is getting back to me. I'm leaning towards the 53 step but it's not cheap. Also consider I'm Canadian and my company will load us northbound with LTL past the border. With a tridem I go from 80k to 102k. I also think with a 53 tridem step I can be 31k empty.

It's where both bearings are the same size. You can tell by the outer cover, it is much larger. The shop manager at my company insisted I go with a parrallel spindle. Less funny tire wear, easier conversion to wide singles, etc..

If you're doing LTL then the 53' makes sense. 31K mt is still a very good weight. Is that with a slider or fixed tandem? Will it be CA legal so it looks like a "dog humping a football" going down the road. Would you go with 17.5" rubber?

Thanks for the lesson on paralell spindles!
