I probably am not going to shed any more light on this than anyone else has but at the risk of giving my own perspective and personal experiences, your thinking about maybe having a relationship or a wife at some point in your truck driving career inspires me to scratch my head and wonder how you plan to pull it off short of finding the most sought after woman on the planet.
Yeah, I've met guys who have miracle wives who keep the home running while the hubby is away sending the money for the mortgage, truck payments, food and repairs and having little if anything to do with raising the kid or kids. I've also met far more guys that lost the wife but still make the alimony, child support, mortgage, truck payments, food and repairs while having little if anything to do with raising the kid or kids.
I'm passed 60, divorced for nearly all of my driving career, have a Son that I see 'when he wants something' who doesn't even talk to me otherwise and an ex that I haven't talked to since the last time she took me to court to try to raise the support payments.
I remember the last time I had a meaningful relationship with a woman and that was years ago. I don't frequent bars, pretty much live a solitary life when I do come home (only seem to have time to get things ready for the next time I'll be out) and any social interaction I'm having is probably here on this website more so than in a gathering of any sort... like I said, I don't have much time to go to a dance or gathering place to socialize.
What I do have though is something everyone else doesn't have... time to go camping, hunting, fishing. Time to think about life, interact with other drivers when I'm out on the road and I've made a few friends out there that I still keep in touch with even if I don't see them much at all.
You want a relationship or do you want to be a truck driver?
Oh... I didn't take any offense to your comment and comparison between truckers and veterans (and I am both).... it made me think of the parallels, similarities and differences between the two and,... your comparison did have some merit. I won't delve into them though,... just wanted you to know this particular Vet can see why a person might put us in like comparisons (away from home, isolated at times, independent, team players, motivated and goal oriented... lots a stuff.
Good luck - I wish you the best.

Listen carefully, I'm exactly in your shoes so heed my advice. I'm 28 and single.
First things first, I'm not sure how to word this without getting flamed and offending folks out there but unless you're our age (under 30, it will be impossible for your to fully comprehend and understand what I'm about to say).
My number 1 rule is I never tell a girl I meet I'm a truck driver (again if you're over 30 please don't comment, I know I shouldn't lie blah blah but unless you're from small podunk hillbilly town, or the girl is some bucktooth 300lb loser, you will be at an automatic disadvantage (being a truck driver is shunned upon by women our age, sad but true, I know it will make many mad but it's true)
Now here's the thing, I thought I was at an advantage because I don't have a wife or kids but doing this job where I'm home only 1 day a week (I'm assuming you might only be home 2 or 3 days a month), good luck getting a wife or kids. You can probably try to do the whole online dating thing but again, truck drivers are less than desirable. And no I never had problems dating in my life, yes I'm very selective of whom I date (college educated professionals for the most part, no children and that are physically very attractive, these types of women do NOT want truck drivers).
And to all you old timers out there, no young attractive female wants to go on the road, they don't even want to be seen near a truck! when was the last time you saw a hot (and i don't mean hot by trucker standards) you female in a truck, NEVER, not by her free will anyways...and by young I don't mean a 35 year old, that's an old hag...flame on! -
WAS gonna be naughty....but changed my mind

Interesting points you all brought up from different aspects of life. I'm just thinking about my future, I mean nowadays people are always in the hurry or always going somewhere or seem to have little or no time to do anything anymore. If I had to choose between a relationship or a job, I would have to choose the job because that is what will keep me on my feet. I don't want to sound obnoxious or a pig but looks like my future would be hitting up the gentlemens club LOL!
I mean honestly, in this country as it stands right now, to make a good living, you have to be away from your home for extended periods of time unless you own your own business but that still requires some travel to meet up with clients and whatnot. And I'm just guessing here but I don't believe there are any women in my age range on the road who are single that I may just happen to "run into" and maybe something will click. I'm not too worried about it right now, once I get closer to 30 maybe I might worry a little bit.
I really don't see marriage happening right now at my age. It would just eat me out to have to pay out alimony to a woman who no longer loves me, heck at that point I minds well be dead! I was just curious as to if anyone in my age bracket has had any success on having someone commit to you being that we are truck drivers. -
Well i am married to a hot six foot tall brunet and I have two kids that I see often. You will have no time too date the first couple of years trucking but once you have experience and qualify for dedicated and local jobs then you will have time for a relationship otr doesn't work well with a family my wife likes to see me at least three times a week . And I found in the past that a lot of women have no problem dateing truckers

As you put it, all the pretty ones are college professionals. If they have a degree they have a job. So when do they have time to travel? No wonder you haven't seen one!
Giggles the Original and chopper103in Thank this.
