That’s awesome! You’re still young and got things rolling well. My 3 yr old daughter said she wanted to be a truck driver, and a welder. Oldest one wants to be a midwife like mom.

You set up the right way, and didn’t fall to lifestyle inflation. I’m right there with you with old vehicles, and living small. Proud of your situation!

Good advice and preparation. We went from hauling cotton for months on end prior to COVID to then hauling general freight in the van scratching by for a bit. My 6 month plan is also cash reserves, but above that I’ve always found a way. I have plenty of certs for welding I can always use.

I was just reaching out for perspective, I’m always interested in other O/O’s game plan and start up.

I’m planning to outsource code work to engineers to build an app actually. Will sit around a bill of 150k - 200k so trucking was my best fit. I’m really happy with my current situation, but I’m really interested in building this app along with taking over the diesel repair and custom game in dfw haha

The code is for all back end of the app. I found a company in Ukraine that builds apps for people that don’t have time nor skill. 6 months of two dedicated computer engineers will run me about 200k. The more i listen to people who know and do more, the more I realize how possible it is to build avenues of income that compound, especially in this age.

Sounds like you're putting a good career together. You've got the right attitude about trucking. Anybody with half a brain can do it and you can stop/start anytime. Only those who REALLY lack creativity still see it as a dead end where you are gone from home all the time. I would caution you to reap the rewards of your closeness to family/uncles in this business but keep them at arm's reach. Family and business rarely play well together. Not saying it can't, it just usually doesn't.

I also have family in software/app development. It's a world I don't know anything about and wish I did.

I agree with the family advice. We’re all very much out to help each other, but they plan to retire from ownership. Just imagine 20 out of 30 ish O/O’s running tx and ok together keeping a eye out for each other, it’s primarily brothers, uncles, grandpas, and close friends. But we all want a good out plan for the owners, they put us on a good gig and gave a lot who had nothing a good opportunity. Had some guys netting 180k home 5 nights a week. To sum up, decently good boundaries and a lot of love in our gig.

Are you planning to ever break into apps? If you can save and afford to hire people to build it for you with NDA contracts you can run a lot of the non code portion while in the truck over the phone. Lots you can do with the time we have

Na, I don't have the skills and really don't have the interest. It's a little late for me with that, I feel. My goal as an O/O is to never do anything with trucking out of the truck (at home) other than maintenance. With that mindset any time I'm sitting in the truck waiting I get trucking office stuff done. I run my own numbers, there is always something to do. Also, since I pick my own freight I work real hard to not get surprised by long wait times.
