The way I figure it, if you're not going to the city nor LI, and it's not between 2300 and 0430, take 287 to the Tappan Zee and back to 95. If its rush hour, or if your delivery point isn't along 95 in CT or RI, take 287, 87, 84. I've only been doing this 14+ years, and ran only the Northeast for 4 of them, but that is the way I go. I will sneak through the Cross Bronx going south during the day, but that is wholly dependent on 1010 WINS and google maps traffic.
287 around nyc

Trust me as someone who has been to New England at least 50 times in 8 months do the 287
-
Trust anyone who knows the deal...No matter what time of day or night, 95/Cross Bronx is a nightmare on steroids. Between night work and accidents, etc...just do the path of least resistance and jump off on 287 just across the NY line from Ct., take it as the other guy says about 14-15 miles west to route 17 southbound...and in 20 minutes from that jct. you'll be at I-80 (east) where you could go back east on I-80 to I-95 SB back to the NJ Turnpike/I-95 south.
Think of the Cross Bronx as an experiment that went very wrong.
Depending on your next pickup or delivery from up in Mass. if you're deadheading somewhere...you can always run 95 SB to Old Saybrook, Ct, out Ct. rt. 9 NB (all 4 lane) across I-84 west over into NY, and down 684 to 287...it just depends on where you're headed next, if it's north-central New Jersey or that area. 9 works good as an escape route from New Haven and points south sometimes, coming from RI and up that way.Last edited: Jul 21, 2014

Its not as bad when you get use to it. I don't care how long it take you or backs up traffic always keep your 7 second minimum following distance

I saw a few cars following me swerve to shoulder when I had to hit the brakes cause they don't know how to yield and just whip right in front doing 40 in a 65. Didn't even flinch or look, just yanked that wheel

You're extremely close to Provincetown, Mass. where you are...that's a mecca for "limp wristed individuals", so be careful...

Yup if you paying your own tolls there is no point in going across the GW to get to MA. All summer I've been hauling trees to Hyannis and it's been easier to go 287 to 84 to avoid road construction on 95 in NY and Conn. But have came back down 84 and ran 95 thru cross bronx to avoid tolls after 7pm and before night construction 10pm and slowly breeze right thru . But thats a tight window with no guarantee.

Just to clear up a couple of things--IF your going north--in terms of tolls it is definetly cheaper around 287--especially late nite-w/ezpass---
BUT--if you are going SOUTH--95 down thru the city is FREE--where 287 around the top has a TRUCK ONLY toll that will cost you $30 cash or 24.31 w/ezpass---
make your own decision---just wanted to point this out--BTW--I only go south thru the city--and I do NOT care what time it is--But that is just me
