2m, 6m, or 10m Ham radios which is best, why

Check and see if you have much going on on 440 mhz if not buy a 2 meter only radio ......There are many good HT's for under $150 ans several 45 watt mobile radios for about$140 I bought a FT-1900R and love it ....

EVEN with that tech ticket you can work DX on 10 and 6 meters right now the bands are dead but they will come back....

EXPORTS work well on 10 meters even 25 watts can give you the world ...

 

How good are those handy talkies? I know they're not as good as a good mobile unit with antenna. I've considered a 2 meter handy talkie but only if it's cheap enough.

From what I've gathered from the local amateur club, 2 meters is where the action is. But they recommended a dual band antenna when I was at the ham fest.

 

HT's just don't have alot of range compared to a Mobile unit. I do own a few of each type. A very good HT is the Wouxun KG-UVD1P. The other Wouxun models don't perform as well. Bruces FT-1900 does 55 watts. And a very good Mobile unit for a driver is a Yaesu FT-2900. The 75 watts output comes in handy on the road. With a good antenna I can get into repeaters 100 miles away mobile. You can even get free shipping for places like HRO.

I own several mobile antennas by Comet & Diamond. I now run the Jetstream antennas because of the price (about 1/2 the price of Diamond and Comet). They do work just as good. And they are rebadged Diamond antennas. The JTM-7905 has very high gain. And it's 5ft tall. The JTM-7505 works very well but less gain and about 3 1/2 ft tall.

I have 3 of those Wouxun's and I think they are fabulicious. Will not speak of the things that can be done but they are field programmable. A person could very easily get themselves in trouble deeper than can be imagined in just a few minutes on one of those things. The quality of the build is astounding, incredible considering the source. The radio is not too bad either. The audio I noticed is much better quality when using an external mic.

The interesting thing about these radios is the price, considering they are from Hong Kong I didn't expect much for $100 but was very happy with what I got. I have other radios from Hong Kong such as various Puxing models as well as 4-5 other brands. None of them compare to the Wouxun radios. Last bit of info is of all the Chinese radios I have bought and used this particular model from Wouxun is the only Chinese branded radio that is FCC approved for use in the commercial radio spectrum. Of course HAM's can use just about anything, but I actually used these Wouxun's in my business and it was legal.

The radio quality was better than the Kenwoods and MotoTRBO's we had. The price on the MotoTRBO's was around $1,100 each handheld vs. the Wouxun for $100 each... Let me think about it lol

 

And most people don't want one because they come from China. But they don't know that most HT's are made in China. The Wouxun is one great sounding HT. A few people that I know run them for S&R love them. A really well built unit.

 

Well it is understandable having used several Chinese branded radios why people are scared of buying one. They are all just huge failures in just about every possible QC area there is. I think that is why these Wouxun's shocked me so much. But yes I agree on the the majority of radio brands now being produced in China, some of the finest electronic gadgets we have are produced in China. But as far as anything that is Chinese branded, they don't care about quality. I bet Steve Jobs has a miserable time explaining what he demands on those ipads and iphones. I think the Wouxun company is really trying to break onto the radio scene rather than simply turn a profit.

Really with the quality of that particular model they can't be making much profit at all. I agree too that most of their radios are garbage. I have bought most of my radios from 409shop or asiaradiosales and this is the only radio I think is a high quality radio, although I think the Puxing 888 was loaded with bells and whistles (just was not up to par on the mic). The Puxing has quite the following on youtube too, about the same features as the Wouxun but not FCC approved, probably because the scrambling feature.

 

Ham Radio is Ham Radio, CB is CB. You will learn in your classes that getting a 10 meter rig then making it go on 11 meter will get you a big fine and maybe jail time. So that said a tech ticket will get you microwave down to 10 meter on phone(voice) as well as digital modes. General will get you what the Tech gets plus segments on all the lower bands, then Extra gets you everything! At $15 per test gets you a lot!

 

Also the license is good for 10 years, and free renewal. And some locations you can test for FREE.

You forgot to mention that tech's also have CW on 15M (21.025 - 21.200 MHz),40M (7.025 - 7.125 MHz) and 80M (3.525 - 3.600 MHz) at up to 200 watts.
