If you are sure the valves a adjusted properly (the jake brake slave was backed off when the exhuast valve was adjusted), You may have a valve sucked up in to the seat. Look at number one intake valves. For some reason number one intake has been the common one.Have seen this a few times, took a few times to convince Cat to let me pull the head, at that time 2WS was still under ESC warranty.

thanks DDS why would is start ticking after an adjustment? would you notice the valve getting tight if it was sucking it in?

Not backing the jakes off is the most common cause of ticking noise after a valve set, seen it may times. Exhaust mainfold leak will give a ticking noise too, but it wouldn't come and go with vavle adjustment though.
I've seen a fair few valves pulled up into the head on 6NZs, some so bad the rockers run out of adjustment. -
My buddy has a 5EK and his ticking was a broken valve spring.
