how does shifting in manual in an auto work? like I understand you push it up or down to upshift or downshift, but do you still need to be at the correct rpms or will it rev it for you to get it to the right rpm? will it still grind if you do something wrong or just not make the shift?

just trying to get a basic idea im going to have my trainer show me this stuff when I get back going after thanksgiving.

It is not actually an automatic, I is an Autoshift, you will feel each shift, so yes you do need to be in the correct rpm range.

That is my dislike in the mountains, I don't like the range it shifts in.

For TV you want a ' View Cube '. There is a place across the street from the Petro in Memphis that sells and installs it. Locks onto the satellite while your moving.
Company driver just take the per diem. If your a company driver and you spend more money itemizing than you would with per diem, and your standard deduction, your WTF broke.
When I see a truck with an auto shift, I make the sign of the cross, backing away from it as quickly as possible, never turning my back to it. My boss ask me to test an auto shift once, I drove it like five miles, and said " Hell no."
I can't begin to imagine the all the hills I have run on without a jake, probably wouldn't be here. I personally have seen 8 trucks on fire, usually from the trailer tandems, at the bottom of big hills. And for some reason known only unto Almighty God, bear in California loves to build his coups at the bottoms of some of those big hills. Arizona has one on 89 that's kinda at the bottom, but nothing like CA.

Are you implying that the jakes start fires, or that the new drivers ignite their brakes when their jakes fail?

Jakes prevent fires, crashes, loss of life and property.

There's plenty of threads on tax deductions down in the tax section, just use a good tax preparer and you'll be fine. Not fined.
    I knew it was lame.

Coming out of Vegas on 93 going south when you have to go down into Boulder, after 6 PM until 6AM is no jake zone. It sucks balls. It's 40 mph, but when you have 40K or so in the box, and no jake allowed, I put it in 6th, and still have to stab it all the way down. Coming down 25 after Raton pass near the bottom there is like 3 or 4 miles of ' no jake zone '. That's like LOL, fark it gimme the ticket or i'm pushing 80 with it off, but you really can't do that cause there's always somebody wants to merge.

So basically, these people put lives at risk over not wanting to hear freeway noises?

The engine brake comes on when you let off the throttle. So if you are cruising in 10th gear and want to exit the highway, you just let off the throttle and the jake brake will slow you until the trans shifts to 9th and the jake will slow you more and then trans downshifts to 8th and so on. If you need to brake to slow more, use the service brake. I leave the jake switch on, and at the highest level. There's not much reason to turn off the jake on an auto.

Going downhill, once you brake to the gear that the the jake brake will hold your speed, the auto trans will hold your speed, just like a manual. You don't ned to worry about down shifting as the auto does that for you. Essentially you drive an auto the same way as a manual, but the trans computer always grabs a gear for you.
