I guess all truck drivers also need to be lawyers now as well, just to understand all the in's and out's of all the regs.

Edit: Nevermind, it's been said to death already.

By forcing it to the last minute you might have issues finding somewhere to park. Do as others suggested and take it between the 3rd and 6th hour.

Silverdrifter, forget what your trainer said if you are going OTR.
I will dumb this down because thats the way i have to see it myself.
After any "OFF DUTY" time or "SLEEPER BIRTH" of "MORE" than "30 MINUTES" (could be longer but no less than).
Once you start your "ON DUTY" or "DRIVING" line - inside of "8 HOURS BUT NOT MORE THAN".
You must take a "30 MINUTE BREAK" (or longer if you want).
Once you start your "ON DUTY" or "DRIVING" again -- The "8 HOURS -not related to the last 8 hour period" starts counting down again.
You could probably forget about the 11hr driving rule and the 14 hr rule to simplify things. (In a theoretical sense for the sake of the 30 minute break rule -the 11hr driving 14hr on duty driving rule still applies).
Once you start your day lets say with a pretrip --That 8 hrs starts counting down -- until you log at least (can be more than) 30 minutes --off duty or sleeper --which stops the 8 hr countdown.
I am not yelling with BIG type --just trying to highlight whats important.
I think i got that all correct ! I am sure someone will straighten me out if i dont.Last edited: Jan 14, 2014

No, No NO!
Those clocks don't stop ticking to make your life easier. Things can pop up that extend your duty day. Just because you took a 30 minute break doesn't mean you can ignore your 11/14 hour clocks. You have to keep track of all your duty clocks.
Easiest way I've found is post-it notes for the 14 hour clock. I note the time I started my pre-trip and count 14 hours up and write that down too. Then I just worry about my break & drive times and glance at the post-it for reference. -
maybe he is not unlike most of the driver trainers and only has 1 year, which is 6 months more than the student he is training, of actual driving experience with the only difference being he is an "instructor". ask him if he ever filled out loose leaf logs or drove a truck that would eclipse the speed limit regardless of whatever it is or if he has ever driven a truck WITHOUT a qualcom thingy in it.were all of his driving directions derived from a gps?
okay.i'll ease up on the sarcasm.it's just me- -
he said he drove a truck for 32 years

OH NO, i didnt mean to imply to ignore the 11hr drive time or the 14 hr clock --Thats just a given ! But if you separate the 30 minute break rule from the 11 and 14 i thought it would be easier
I meant to just start the 8hr time keeping after every break of 30 minutes or more (sleeper or off duty) --am i wrong in that thinking ? I figure as long as anyone does that {30minutes or more (off duty or sleeper) constitutes a break -and, or can start the 8hr time period count down again.
I was trying to leave as many clocks as i could out of it --other than 30 minutes or more or and 8 hrs or less.
Crap --i thought i did a good simple job of explaining it --i will take another look or delete post.
I guess i am just making things more confusing. -
HE may have --but just might have been before the 30 minute break rule --and he might not really understand it himself.
