it's a program made by human. and we all know humans aren't perfect. but i'm not going to argue with my program. as long as dot is happy. i'm happy.
but i'd like to know how it figures how many hours i can work. cuz that seems to vary. and if i were on paper. i'd probably lose my license by now. from log violations. -
Take a look at the table I posted:
Required drive time // optimal break & time saved:
0-8 hours -- same
8-11 hours -- 10-hour break faster by 90 minutes
11-16 hours -- same
16-19 hours -- split faster by 30 minutes
19-22 hours -- 10 faster by 60 min
22-24 hours -- same
24-30 hours -- split faster by 60 min
30-33 hours -- 10 faster by 30 minutes
33-41 hours -- split faster by 90 minutes
41-44 hours -- same
44+ hours -- split always faster
See how runs requiring 8-11 hours drive time are 90 minutes faster if you utilize the standard 10 hour break? That's because the optimal split sleeper would have the 2 hour break in place of the 30-minute lunch break (120min-30min=90min). If you took the 8 first, then a 10-hour break would be 390 minutes faster.
Sometimes you may want to take the 8 first -- perhaps you were stuck at a shipper for 7 hours... But the OP is talking about how under the old hos rules, driver could drive 11, stop 10, and then drive 3 more hours in the same day. Taking a 10-hour break under the new hos rules means you can only drive 13.5 hours in a 24-hour day due to the 30 min break. However, if you utilize the 8/2 split -- you can still drive 14 hours (drive 8, stop 2, drive 3, stop 8, then drive another 3 hours in the same day).
"where is the benefit of taking the 2 first? Since the 14 continues to tick away it does nothing to satisfy the 8/2 requirements as it does nothing to stop your clock." -- While the 14 ticks away, the 2 hour break fulfills 2 of your 10 hours needed to gain a new 14/11. Yes, it counts against your 14 initially, but once you take the 8 it no longer counts against your 14 because the 14 starts at the end of that 2 hour break.
Your 11 and 14 start at the end of your 1st qualifying break (be it a 2 or an 8). 8 hours in the sb are exempt from the 14. So any drive time since your 1st qualifying break is subtracted from your 11. Any driving, on duty, off duty, or sb time less than 8 hours is subtracted from your 14. That's how many hours you have remaining...Arkansas Frost, scottied67 and DoneYourWay Thank this. -
But what if I want to take a 1 hour break every 4 hours of driving?
-
you mean like the old days, where you could actually drive like a human. and not a machine.

drive 5, nap 4, and so on. and not worry about running out of hours for the day. or looking for a place to park. -
The old days, we all were so unsafe and reckless, but at least we were rested.MackDaddyMark, Hammer166 and paul_4lp Thank this.

I never fully understood the split rest provision. Say I start my 14 at 1200 and run 8 hours until 2000. Then take an 8 hour sleeper break. At 0400 would I have just the 3 hours of driving left until I took the other 2 hour break? Then what? Would the 14 and 11 reset?
-
Your "new" 11 & 14 would start at the end of your 1st qualifying break.
In your example, your 1st qualifying break ended at 0400, so after your 2nd qualifying break you would have 9 hours left on your 14 (14-3-2) and 8 hours left on your 11 (11-3).DoneYourWay Thanks this. -
You forgot the /sarc tag!

Digger, good to see you back around! -
So, I've been wondering, with how complicated this splitting stuff can be, is it possible to just take a 2 hour break in the middle of the day, pushing your 14 back 2 hours, then just taking a 10 at the end of the day and have everything back to normal? That seems like it should work, but the split rules are always poorly explained or far more complicated than it seems they should be, lol.
