I'm not saying that change is bad im saying acting like it has to be just all them and none of English speaking Americans is not healthy either...... accommodating some who don't even desire to be a contributing part of our society will make us vulnerable....

 

I never said English speaking Americans would be eradicated. That won't happen. I'm only saying basically that American culture is expanding. You'll have more of a multitude of ethnicities, more official languages, probably a more expanded school curriculum, I just envision more inclusivity.

I don't really understand what you mean when you say they don't desire to be a contributing part of our society. They all come over here and desire to work and better themselves. Is that not contributing to our society? They kind of gotta do so in order to advance their lives. They have to buy groceries, automobiles, services, etc, theyre spending their earnings within America. I'd call those contributions.....and vulnerable to what? I don't understand the uneasiness.....

 

You don’t see how someone could lose their patience when it’s nearly all day, every day at this point?

If people are coming here legally with hopes of becoming citizens then there will be no need for multiple official languages. That’s part of the whole citizenship process.

 

You all do realize Europeans don't learn every single European language on that continent, and that truckers over in Europe don't just stay in their own countries, right?

In Europe, there's even, GASP, countries where there's 3 official languages in one single country!!! And you do realize that truckers don't learn all 3 national languages of their single country, right?

You all do realize that Africa and Asia are the same way, many different languages, the truckers all go through other countries not knowing the local language 100% of the time.

And somehow these truckers on the European, Asian and African continents all do fine and get the job done without knowing the local language.

It's hilarious hearing all the old boomers huff and puff about knowing English to drive a truck, when I guarantee there's plenty of Canadians on this forum, in this thread and in the real world who talk about "having to know English to drive a truck" when 75% of them can't speak more than 5 simple phrases of French, you know, that OTHER national language of North America (other than Spanish and English) that everybody forgets about.

Funny how you don't see the truckers talking about needing English to drive a truck moaning and complaining about their fellow Anglo Canadians not being able to speak French.

But all of this is BESIDES the point. Look at Europe, of whom has countries (plural) where there's 3 different national languages all for one single tiny country. Yet somehow the European truckers are able to get the job done, trucking would come to an immediate halt if Europe tried to do some stupid #### like mandate every trucker know every single European language.

 

I mean.....I'm an incredibly patient individual. It takes a lot for me to lose my patience. Again, that kind of thing doesn't bother me. I can see how that might annoy somebody. It probably wouldn't annoy me. However, if I'm working at the fuel desk for instance, it really doesn't matter how I feel about communicating through a translator with a customer. They would have hired me to take care of that customer. That's what matters. I can't sit up here and screw up business because of personal feelings on this topic. That gets checked at the door, and that's what needs to be said to the employees. They have a translator and if it works, use it. Make the sale. Boom. Done. I used a lot less energy than it would take to fume about what can't be controlled.

Even if people become citizens, sure they will learn English but their language will still permeate many parts of the country. There will be generations afterwards that will come over here and need a safe landing spot. They will most likely transition by affilaliating with familiar faces til they learn English. As the country becomes more diverse, with fast growing ethnicities/nationalities of color, I still believe that USA will be multilingual.

 

It’s always been multilingual. I don’t think people should give up their native language. Without their language their heritage will slowly go away. I think it’s important for younger generations of immigrant citizens to learn their native language and not just English. I do, however, feel they should assimilate and be able to communicate instead of expecting all of us who do speak English in this country to figure out how to communicate with them. Like I said, when I’ve visited other countries my inability to speak the language was my problem, I didn’t put the burden on the citizens.

 

Most of Europe, regardless of spoken language, uses a standardized system of road signs. That would make navigation easier without knowing the languages spoken at the location you’re traveling.

Same with Asia and Africa. Most signage uses what was agreed upon at the Vienna convention in the late 60’s.

 

I'm with you.....and I think they do assimilate, but it's no quick process. I think its good to stay true to who you are and stay grounded to your roots, but I don't see any harm in expansion of diversity and official languages, especially in a nation as powerful as USA.
