Ok guys, here's the honest truth from my own experience. In September 2006 I leased a truck with a tank outfit in UT, hauling clean petroleum (gas, diesel, jet, etc). Usually pulled A-trains in UT, WY, NV, ID, and semi work in CO and OR. I paid myself 25% of the gross. The first full year I grossed 360,000. I had several months when I made over 40,000 gross. After all the expenses I still put money in the bank for the truck. The second full year was slightly less than 360,000 gross. Do the math, I made 90,000 for ME. I never ran for less than $3/mile. The higher fuel went, the more money I made. When everything shut down in 2009, it came to a screeching halt. Nothing gradual, just stopped. I didn't turn a wheel for 6 weeks. Moved to a different outfit in April 09, and managed to survive another year, then finally gave up. Couldn't find anyplace that would hire an o/o, let alone pay a decent rate. Anyway, the point is it is highly possible that somebody grossed over 300,000 in a year. Don't discount their experience just because you haven't done it.

Have a friend that runs one of those large cars pulling for Reliable and he pulls down some pretty impressive #'s.
Hard to do pulling a dry van thoughmountaingote and stevez57305 Thank this. -
It seems like being an owner-op sure is a lot of work for $350k/year.
Obama makes 400k and all he does is talk and write 'executive orders' that nobody pays any attention to. -
$325K per year seems like a tall order for a O/O.
Saying that, some of you guys that seem to think there is no money in trucking, do you think all these thousands of trucking companies that hire company drivers are doing it out of the goodness of their heart?dog-c, Orangees, spyder7723 and 3 others Thank this. -
Wow, that's way more than the Prime driver's 210,000..
truckon and mountaingote Thank this. -
Exactly!!
We're in it to make a profit, paying a driver is only part of the expenses.
L/P guys are NOT O/O's ...they and their equipment are under the thumb of the carrier they're leased to. And the rates they driver for are a complete joke. Such a SCAM !!Last edited: Oct 23, 2015
goin2fast10 and stevez57305 Thank this. -
The weird thing is a lot of the super rich guys that brag about their income look like homeless bums without teeth.
dog-c, Orangees, lots of character and 3 others Thank this. -
I ran a group of banks for 19 years. I can tell you that some folks make a lot of money and some folks don't.
In dry Vans you can easily gross 6000 a week. Just running around the Great Lakes region.
A smart owner operator will always make more then a smart company driver.
Just remember if you are a woman you will only make 72% of what a man will make.dog-c and stevez57305 Thank this. -
