I have a Galaxy 33hp 2. In the morning when I first get in my truck I have the RF gain wide open, my squelch date wide open and yet there is zero static and no Voice receive. When I key it up I get a high SWR tone. As the morning progresses the static comes in, the SWR tone goes away and my receive improves. Any thoughts?

how cold is it outside?
-
Pretty cold. Around 34-36 degrees

Could just need time to warm up...or a cold solder joint somewhere.

Engage the choke and let it run on high idle while you fill your coffee thermos before scraping ice off the windshield.
(I don’t really miss those days, but the New Yorker with its optional gearing and police-spec V8 440 was great to listen to as it woke up. Subtle changes. And —time to leave — slip the cassette into the AM/FM/FM-Stereo player to let The Presidents Own play, “Anchors Aweigh” as you cast off the mooring lines and rang the engine room to bring in the TorqueFlite).
If this is what’s needed , think of it as part of performance.Last edited: Jan 17, 2019

Also, as I speed up my static gets worse. If I run a direct hot and ground to the battery do you think that would help? I think I am getting a lot of engine noise.

Please start with your antenna, get it checked by someone who knows what they are doing with an antenna analyzer. then go from there.

Thank you for the help and advice.

If you have a spare radio swap it out see what the changes are, Sounds like a cold solder or maybe some caps going away. I'd probably try refloating the board, or fire it up bench with a can of freeze spray in one hand and a heat gun in the other, also pressure on the board can show a bad soler.

And what do you mean by pressure on the board can show a bad solder? I'm learning but some of these responses are still a little over my head.
