I’ll add to the 3zj discussion. I have a 3zj running right now, all stock runs pretty good imo. 16.4 pistons with new injector nozzles. What’s you guys opinions on a b/w 1.32 a/r stage one vs a 178063 for a good running 3zj?

I have no experience with those, but I swapped out my stock one for a 177148 I think was the number. No hp gains but much greater usable rpm range. Would need a bigger exhaust housing for going beyond 550hp I’m sure.

Did you run the 177148 on the 3zj? What turbo was on the 3zj originally? Mine seems to be an oddball, it has a wastegated Garrett gt75 which in the little info I’ve found, has a 1.26 a/r exhaust.

Yes I’m running it on my 3zj, I can’t remember the number of my stock turbo, maybe I can look it up later. It was a cat non wastegate unit tho. Oem I’m pretty sure. The 177148 is a replacement for an oem e block turbo I think. It has a wastegate and I had to get e block oil lines to make it fit because of the wastegate

Yup fimiliar with the 177148, I’m ok with this turbo now, it seems to be in good shape so far, I’m just curious. What kinda boost does your 177148 make and did you adjust the wastegate any.

73D02CB1-6D9E-4383-9F78-26F08D0FC7C5.png I seen IPD makes a two piece piston kit with correct oil jets if you don’t want to go the cat route and have the rods wore out has. In all the years of info on this site and the garage I never really figured out the exact c model nozzle that matches the steel top piston with no additional timing modifications

I have not had a 2 piece piston in my hands yet but have seen pictures.

I’ve only got to see a B model piston and a steel C15 ACERT piston so far.

    Are they actually more durable?

I think that’s what’s in the E model I’m currently driving. 37,000 hours on it, over 1 million miles, still going well.

@Gambino1994 i saw that kit listed as well. I would be curious about the correct nozzle to match those pistons too if anyone has that info.
As for boost on my 177148. About 25psi wastegate untouched. I drove it without the wastegate for a bit before I had the right oil lines. I was making over 30 but no more power. And it didn’t sound all that great up there.

Every motor I have seen with that steel top piston has issues and is short lived. Now I haven't assembled one myself but.....

Wore out: I had thought that too.

I had figured the 2 piece would maybe vibrate a little as the steel crown is on a hinged pin that is held center by the close tolerance to the sleeve and aluminum skirt.

Also both metals would expand and contract at different rates.

So I’m guessing by keeping the power levels down, like factory 475 hp, maybe helps make the 2 piece piston live longer.
