Ive got 4mg36013, been trying to make it pump out power but cant quite seem to get it where i want it. I rebuilt engine last year, had head reworked, rebuilt timing advance and governor, and lapped b&p's. Have a bullydog stage1 turbo and have fuel and torque screws out almost all the way. Timing is advanced to where it gives me the best boost pressure, although it does want to miss and blow white smoke on cold start up but seems to be fine once warmed up and rolling. It does seem like the smoke will change colors from black to grey to white at what seems like random just driving. Engine less than 50k since rebuild. Ive done all work myself but im just stumped. HELP

Your timing is retarded. If the engine is blowing white smoke on start up cold and does so until warmed up your injection pump timing is retarded. Also if you have the timing set up now for most boost its retarded.
Advance it 1/2 a hole and watch your power come up, smoke go a way , egts go down and boost come down.AModelCat Thanks this. -
I leave the engine pinned, unpin the pump and bump the pump over same direction as engine turns.
-
I did have it set a 1/2 hole in the other direction and it got great fuel mileage but rattled really bad and would only get about 28psi boost. I thought that was retarded because i left engine pinned and moved pump opposite the engine rotation
-
I leave the pump pinned and back the engine up 1/2 hole on the flywheel with timing advance loose.
Dont be so worried about boost numbers. Go by response and sound and smoke. You want the engine to have a nice cackle to it but not like you have a bunch marbles in there either. Should burn clean once turbo is lit and be responsive. Egts should run cool and mpg up. -
If engine is too retarded it will be very quiet with no cackle. Egts will be high, boost will be high , smoke will be black , cold starts stinky and white unburnt fuel smell. Less power
Advanced , boost lower, egts lower, burn clean responsive and better mpg, little more diesel cackle upon take off. More power -
No this was extremely advanced.
1/2 hole on the pump is a lot.. generally when people talk about that it's the flywheel.
1/2 - 3/4 hole on flywheel -
Well, ive been playing with it all day and something isnt right. Swaan, can u email me please
-
Been playing with it all day and something isnt right. Im pretty mechanically inclined, so i cant believe how much trouble im having!! There isnt a miss and white smoke anymore, very little clatter if any and is grey smoking. Seems to rev kinda slow
-
I would start over. Pin pump and flywheel. Go from there. Sounds like your way out.
