They piecemeal a "kit" together for a B nowadays. It's basically a platinum kit, but all individually assorted parts for some odd reason.
Your prices are a lot better than the New England prices. Cylinder packs are $587.00 each here, a new head is $$3,470.00. That's what sparked my attention to compare pricing in different areas of the country. A buddy bought a Cat head for a 3406B a month ago in North Carolina and it was $2,200.00. That's a pretty substantial difference just in that.
3406B 7FB inframe overhaul average cost.

If they'd HOLD that price for me...I'd get it out there next week. I was quoted $28,000.00 with a 4 yr warranty from my local Cat dealer, but that's an "estimate". They start looking for more and more things to replace, or rebuild the injection pump, etc. and pretty soon you're up to $35,000.00 or more. I just have a tough time swallowing that kind of number anymore...I'm sorry.gearjammr78, spsauerland, A5¢ and 2 others Thank this. -
7FB 04998 is my whole serial # spsauerland...SAR, Oxbow, Humblepie and 1 other person Thank this. -
Makes you wonder why...labor rates probably.Oxbow Thanks this. -
Here are basic part list for you. Prices I can check online with my local Pete dealer that is part of Larson group. Here it goes...
Cylinder Packs 20R-1115 $504.03 x6 $237 core
Reman Head 0R-3719 $2982.03 $1351 core
Main Bearings 317-8766 $48.96 x7
Thrust Plate 253-1752 $33.40 x2
Rod Bearings 328-5574 $29.06 x6
Upper GSK kit 232-6652 $292.32
Reman oil pump 0R-9448 $566.93 $825 core
Lifter Clips 305-6843 $7.38 x 12
Pan Gasket 4N-1151 $16.07
Everyone does overhaul a little different. I usually add some additional stuff. Add ons include oil cooler, WP, thermostats and replacing valves and springs in oil filter base. Injector nozzles usually have tested and advise. New spacer plate 2I-2981 is $517.77. If HG failed, it gets new head bolts. If equipped with a Jake, I also get a tune up kit for it. If front cover is seeping, might as reseal that and rebuild the fan hub and put on newer style damper. Might as well go through timing advance if it is showing any wear. It can snowball pretty quickly...
Our engine S/N's are only 500 apart.Last edited: Feb 10, 2019
SAR, W900AOwner and Humblepie Thank this. -
Would this be the same for a 7fb22992? -
I would have to look up to verify, but yes it would be close.

I'd do everything you said anyway, I just put T'stats and new water pump on it a week ago, so those are good.
I'm going to tear into it today and see what I can find went wrong. I also "may" have the truck sold...I got mad the day it failed me and threw it on Facebook and a young fella from Missouri called and talked for 2 hours last night about it. We may be making a deal, we'll see.
If that is truly the case...then I'm gonna be on the lookout for a W900L from 1999 and down to about 1995 or so. I miss my last 2000 that got wrecked. I miss the few creature comforts like air ride cabs, tilt and telescopic wheels, less noise, and a few little life's luxuries as I've aged.
Anybody have a good 'ol '95 to '99 like I just described with either a Cat or N-14, I'm gonna be interested in hearing about it.
If our serial numbers are only 500 apart, I guess it'd kind of make sense in that the truck I pulled this 7FB out of is an '82 FL FLC that came from a kid in southern Michigan...maybe it was sold at a dealer close to you or something to that effect...?
Thanks for the reply spsauerland!Attached Files:
