That test I referred to was also on an engine stand in a shop. Pyro was also in the manifold, honestly you raise a good point I hadn’t thought of. I don’t know if they pulled it 2 minutes or 20. It does make a difference. I remember us talking long ago about the 78/1.45 pulling better on the top side. I did try a 7203 cat reman on that black one time it only made a round when I went back to the factory 460 turbo.

What works for me may not work as well for others doing different types of work. Lots of times it’s dependent upon driver. Some think it’s doing better down low. I run one a little different than most.

I was 15 first time I got to drive out on the boulevard. Headed East outta OKC for home. I was trying to show be a top shelf hand. Dad cut his eyes over at me said get a gear “Son the Bible doesn’t tell you every thing that will get you an eternity in the flames. Luggin a CAT is one of em. Especially this one” that always stuck with me. That’s the only V8 I ever run, but I liked my 3406 1500 and up.

Ha, the guy who I was working for that taught me to drive his 70 Pete with an 8V71, 5 x 4, probably 5xx rear end ratio, would literaly rack me on the knuckles if I didn't down shift the ole 318 when I pulled it hard below 1900! That thought process, which doesn't jive with new engine manufacterer's desire to pull their computer controlled engines down to 800 rpm in order to squeze out another .003 mpg (at the cost of losing and engine earlier in my mind), is what remains with me.

When I say I work local, I usually stay in a 50-60 mile radius of the shop but it’s in a country area where most of the driving isn’t in heavy traffic or stop and go city driving. Mostly fairly flat with a few short but steep hills.
Just thinking outside the box here but if a 177148 dies out around 1800 and a 78/1.45 lags a little on the low end, wouldn’t it be better to go with the 78/1.45 and use the upper side of the rpm range and just deal with the lag in what little bit of in town driving I do? Seems like from what y’all are saying both would be good choices and it’s kinda like splitting hairs when making a choice. From what I’ve found so far though, the 78/1.45 is about $400 more than the 177148. I don’t know if it would be justifying to go that route with both seeming like good choices.

@wore out looking at some other threads you have commented on last night. I am assuming I will need to swap to dual cooling nozzles when running the 160-1131 pistons? Also, an e model governor spring. Would I need this too? If so, you wouldn’t happen to have a p/n would you? Thanks for all you guys help. I don’t like guessing. It would be next to impossible for a newbie to get it right the first time as much misinformation as it is out there.

    #### you caught me slipping. I was in bed other night when it hit me you need the 166-3650 cooling nozzles then I forgot to tell you.

8M-9141 is govnor spring for a 7FB it’s what you want.

Sounds good but just to make sure you know the details, it is a 7fb block and rotating assembly but has a round port head and a 7e5888 pump. This is probably the original pump to the truck since it came with a 3zj. Just to double check, what’s an easy way to check the pump to make sure it’s a dual scroll before buying 3590 nozzles. They were running 3421 nozzles in it when I got it.

For clarification, on my 4MG I used the 166-3650 dual squirter cooling nozzles, which worked with a 3/8" retaining bolt. And rather that putting an E model oil pump on I used the 9Y-1792 oil pump relief pressure retainer. Might be better to just go with an OR9449 (I think) oil pump and not have to worry about the retainer if you are planning on replacing the oil pump anyway.

I appreciate it @Oxbow. The 9449 should be here tomorrow. I pulled the original one apart and there was more wear than I wanted to go back with so I just ordered a new one with the shorter spring retainer. I will get those nozzles coming asap.

@wore out finally got the parts in to get this dinosaur purring again. Went with the 160-1131 pistons and the 3590 nozzles like you recommended. I have a question on that p/n piston, after measuring the bowl with a caliper, the bowl width is exactly the same as the 9y-4004 pistons that I pulled. Only difference I can tell in these is the ring lands are a good bit closer to the top crown of the piston. Just want to make sure these will be right for my application before I get it together and it’s too late to swap them out.
