Ok, as previously suggested I skint back the wire that goes from coolant sensor to coolant gauge and as suggested it seems to be a fat copper wire, which may in fact be a, “has filled tube”. From the skint spot I went to ground with no movement at the gauge, with the key in the, “on” position. If this is or sounds like the gas filled style, can I switch it to another style? Would it be better to call Cat with engine # or Pete with VIN#?

You’ll have to call Pete with the VIN. I was thinking that all the 379 used an electric gauge and all 359 used the tube 1 piece style. Now the thing is they made both in 87 as far as both models. The oil pressure and temp gauge on the 359 were a little bigger, but to put a point to all this rambling I can see 87’s being different from anything.
299082 is the vin on my 91 if that will help you get the electronic stylemile marker 27 and Oxbow Thank this. -
Good point about 87 being the last of the 359 and first of the 379 - that probably explains the different wire/gas set up. Would guess that the sender would also need to be changed, and probably the gauge too?wore out Thanks this.

Yes they are all 1 piece and truly mechanical or will work regardless of cab power if they are functional.mile marker 27 and Oxbow Thank this.

Mine says made in May of ‘87. VIN 1XP5DB9X7HD216971. Which ever style is compatible to change to and most accurate.
Oxbow Thanks this. -
Installing a new mechanical gauge assy is probably the easiest and most cost effective choice. They can be had at most every local auto parts store. Repairing back to factory electrical sender and gauge will surely be more challenging and costly. Pete parts always has issues looking up senders anyhow. Gauge vs hot water light, some had both senders.

Do the later model 3406B’s have the mechanical sender and gauge?
Oxbow Thanks this. -
My two B models have three senders. I believe the two in front are temp gauge (single pole) fan (double pole), and the one in the middle right side goes to the high temp warning light (single pole) or, if it had a Kysor shut down double pole.
I have had Pete give me the wrong sender according to VIN as you say.mile marker 27, Goodysnap and wore out Thank this. -
Stewart Warner has some really good looking gauges that fit the factory holes. Our local parts store keeps some in stock. As @Goodysnap said that’s the easiest solution
mile marker 27, Oxbow and Goodysnap Thank this. -
Yes sir, I’ve got another sending unit beside the coolant unit. It’s right beside and you the left of the coolant one. 2 wires, if I recall? There’s another in the middle right side of the head, tween the jakes. I got a pic of it.Oxbow Thanks this.
