Hello guys, just a quick question. I have the b model cat. I had the truck running, and out of nowhere it starts shaking, sort of like losing power fixing to turn off. I was pressing the gas pedal but it wasn’t delivering fuel to the motor when it finally it cuts off. I tried to turn it on again, it did cut on but it was really struggling to stay on and shuts off again. Now it won’t turn on at all, it just makes a click noise when I press the start button. Has anybody went through this? I can’t find the problem. I left my truck in the woods. Help pls fellow drivers.

@woreout you run it outa fuel? Then burn up the starter?
exhausted379 Thanks this. -
I have a '91 379 with a B motor and I haven't experienced anything like that.
Personally I blame all the unnecessary technology as the culprit for most of the modern problems in life.Opendeckin Thanks this. -
Sounds like you're out of fuel or sucking in air then you killed the batteries pushing it.

Pull the hand primer pump. Turn it upside down and look in the 2 holes. If both check valves look the same it’s junk. They are opposite so 1 holds pulling fuel when you raise the pump. The other holds fuel when you push the pump. Way it just happened all of sudden I’d say that one of your check valves flipped. Sorta common occurrence.
if that’s not it if it will pump up with the hand pump, start or try but not stay running it’s the lift pump under the injection pump.
If it won’t pump up with hand pump and you verify it’s working by holding your thumb over each fitting of main filter base 1 at a time it’s sucking air. Which is a cracked stand pipe in the tank if top draw or cracked fuel water separator base. Also a possibility of a fuel line with a hole that chaffed through. Last is most rare possibility. It’s not gonna be in the lines etc. it happened quickly. It should be an easy find and fix.
For the just clicking symptoms check connections on starter with a 3/4 make sure they are tight. If so and it’s a Delco MT 39 or 42 (non gear reduction) starter take a big screwdriver on back of solenoid your gonna see a big post which is positive and directly under it is the positive for starter drive. If you cross them 2 it’s gonna turn the starter but not engage it. Warning there will be plenty of sparks. The old Delcos will get warm and create a dead spot. Crossing those 2 post gets it past it.Last edited: Jul 15, 2024
