Yeah , same principal though in the context of my quote.
Just semantics.
In hind sight though you usually (not always) get a get a second or so of over fueling when this happens.
Therefore a puff of black smoke.

Thanks for all the help guys, I think it may be something to do with low fuel pressure what might cause this?
-
Replace the fuel valve in the filter housing use a large wrench and do not over tighten valve when you replace it.
logtrucker25 Thanks this. -
Fuel lines do go bad...
-
Try shimming or replacing the transfer pump spring.
It's the under the large 17mm plug on the side of the pump.
I made shims out of ring terminals to go from 70 PSI on mine to 100 Psi.logtrucker25 Thanks this. -
UPDATE: I installed a new fuel valve an new filter an no change. what else could cause low fuel pressure? could the transfer pump be worn? thanks for the tip dwmac71 your talkin about the pump on the front of the engine?
-
DON'T replace anything else, or waste time. I had this exact problem. Those model engines are prone to ecm glitches for some reason. Took me 2 trips to CAT but ever since then perfect.
Call a couple CAT dealers and tell them you heard about the ECM problem, and most likely they will diagnos for free and charge you just the 1hr book time for the data transfer!!! They told me there is some kinda of code built in the kick the ecm reading, but nothing physical triggers it, its all in the brain.
Hope this helps. Oh, if you need more help, I delt with Carter CAT in Fredericksburg,VA. Nice guys and super helpful. -
Yes, that's the one.
Had the same problem a few years back.
The truck acts like its running out of fuel.
10 shop hours at 110.00$ per looking for ECM problems only to find low fuel PSI. they replaced the fuel valve which got it high enough were it would run.
I didn't have the cash for a new pump at the time or i would have replaced it.
I did some net searches and found info on the pump springs going slack over time. I installed a fuel psi gauge and added shims to 100 to 110 psi going down the road.
Most of the post said not to go over 110 PSI due to fuel blowing past the injector seals.
They also said cat has a new spring kit refit for the pump.logtrucker25 Thanks this. -
Well boys i still havent fixed er. tried new transfer pump an new hand pump with no change. today i hooked up restriction guage with sight glass on primary filter an i seem to have air in the fuel. narrowed it down to one tank maybe a bad pickup tube. (its a t800) an then drove with that tank unhooked an it still seems sluggish! kinda confusing any other ideas?

Not to say it again (I haven't read that you've tried it) but my truck was a 05 T800 day cab with the 3406E motor. I had the EXACT same problems you keep describing. I would make a phone call to a couple CAT dealers and see if they suggest pluggin it in. I had to have my ecm flashed 2 times. The first flash didnt correctly transfer but ever since that 2nd flash (about an hour long) its been going strong. I don't drive it anymore, but I talk to the owner a couple times a week. 3 of his new trucks back then had this problem and all 3 were fixed with the ecm flashes/updates.
Have you even tried something related to the ecm/computer? Seems like you've exhausted all of your mechanical options at this point.logtrucker25 Thanks this.
