Old cat motor started smoking really bad for about 5 minutes on startup (looked like a steam engine). Then ran fine with no smoke. Also had fuel coming out of the turbo gasket area. Assumed bad o- rings on injectors. Pulled injectors and found the bottom small o-rings either totally missing or turned to carbon. The middle o-ring on several injectors either cracked or broken. All the upper o-rings were still good. Also had several breaks in the insulation of the jake/injector wiring harness so pulled that out. I imagine the labor on all this is fairly ridiculous since the last time I paid for an injector replacement was $750 at cummins for an n14.

Just curious is it possible to pressurize the cooling system to check to see if the injector sleeves (cups) are leaking? Would that work or not?
cke and jamespmack Thank this. -
be thankful

The 3406E we have did the white smoke, engine sputters for a little then clear up for several years.
It always ran fine after that until this year it started missing a lot.
We sent all 6 injectors away to be rebuilt.
All 6 were tested. 5 had low flow and one was unreadable.
So all 6 were re done.
Truck has not smoked white, sputtered since then. -
Gonna say if you're not idling excessively it sounds like an injector issue. White smoke is typically raw fuel, couple that with diesel slobber would make me lean towards injectors.

..$1000 price and labor for diagnose and 1 injector replacement ...3 months ago in Philly area ( my buddy hooked me up with independent cat guy who did it at 11pm ) otherwise i think much more cost and time

Almost no idle time. Seeing as how I have obvious o-ring damage that would allow fuel to leak down into the cylinders I'm going with that first. The heat cycles and thermal expansion/contraction that occur allows for some interesting things to occur with such close tolerances and o-rings.

Was that labor only? I'm doing it myselfChuyRamirez1 and cke Thank this.

I believe that bottom o-ring is supposed to turn to carbon.
