It would make the jakes weaker.

The bigger the gap the stronger the jake.

You could set them at 33 thou.
Dont go over spec .You can break rockers if you dont go by the book.

Gotcha. I may just leave them at .030. I'm concerned that if I set them at the higher end of the range then they may be in a dangerous spot before I run another overhead.

    Oxbow Thanks this.

Understand the clearence on valve adjustment get tighter as the miles are put on the engine. From valve seat wear. Could you break a rocker? Maybe, maybe not. My engine jake lash is set at .037 per cat specs. Not telling you to go that loose on yours. The 340a jakes work great at .034. If your not comfortable set them at the specs. .001 isn't going to make a difference. I have never had a rocker break or cam roller fail doing this.

Specs for jake lash depend on a few things. It goes by serial # , hp rating and model of jake head it self.
Just because super hauler sets his at .037 doesn't mean you can set others the same. And yes rocker arms do break when going to loose.

Oxbow, SAR and JimmyWells Thank this.

Agreed, don't set yours at my engines specs. I was just using that as an example. As I stated.

Indeed. I'm aware. As mentioned earlier, I have 340a jakes and the spec calls for .030 +/- .003. Thanks again for all the input, gentlemen.

    Oxbow and SAR Thank this.

The ticking was a confirmed exhaust leak today coming from the v band clamp at the turbo down pipe. Replaced the clamp all is quiet again. I also ran the full overhead since I finally picked up the injector tool. I set the Jakes at .030 but I need some clarification. I read above that I can set them a little looser and they'll be stronger. Am I understanding that correctly?

    Oxbow Thanks this.
