The thumb button on the control levers does the same thing oxbow is saying either or the pumps without the engine running won't have any pressure until you get it running. When starting there is no pressure until the starter spins the engine for several seconds then develops pressure and locks it up so it takes a lot to get it running hence the ether. Thanks oxbow the more I think about it the more I'm inclined to think that's the problem.Jacob 3408 have you figured it out yet. Haven't heard from you for day or so just wondering.

If someone up dated the starter lever and left out the glow plug part that the problem, 3408 must have the glow plugs working to start without spray when eng is cold

It sounds like your supply pump is not running enough pressure should be up around 40 to 50 maybe even 60 pounds !
