when i did hotshot I slept in the truck alot logged off duty rather than sleeper birth was never asked to show any hotel receipts or anything like that even when i went threw a dot audit they skimmed threw my log books said everything looked good and moved onto the next thing. they didn't go threw my logs with a fine tooth comb or anything but obviously they didn't see anything that made them want to take a closer look.

i did see a hotshot rig a while back that i thought was really cool. they took a ambulance removed the rear body installed a small sleeper and a 5th wheel and ran a step deck trailer. 150 gallon semi fuel tank mounted left to right behind the sleeper.

as far as purchase price on a semi as the previous poster said a truck can be found for 10k or less. I have been thinking of buying a truck to put to work in the oil field, a pretty nice Volvo or freight liner 00-06 with 5-600k miles can be found for 24-30k if you want to go back into the 90's you can find higher millage trucks that have had in frames done for 10-20k seems you hardly see any volvo's in this year/price range. mostly freight liners, some kenworth t-600's and such are found in the >20k price range peterbiult 379's seem to always catch a higher comparable price for age/condition. personally I'm looking for something that's less than 30k with a min of 450hp with a 13 or 18 speed trans in decent condition I'm not real hot to buy yet and have run across a few trucks listed that fit what I'm looking for but they have all be sold by the time i got to calling on them.

Good info Thanks All , what about working for a company that uses o/ops ? I think we are going to be doing it w/o the partner so I'm wanting to hire a driver instead . With the larger tractor I can pull whatever and wherever I need to any suggestions on companies taking loads out of S.C.? I plan on getting my own mc & plates etc from what I've been reading that looks like the right way to do this ? If I get on with a company that would make it easier to get started anyways then we can go from there ? Thanks Again

I don't know of any owners of duallies with goosenecks employing drivers. (Many of these rigs are not truly hotshot . They are just smaller flatbeds or stepdecks ) The revenue just isn't there to provide decent income for 2 parties if you have your own authority or 3 parties if leased to a carrier like ACME .

You're right . I meant motel NOT required . Too late to edit now .
    DEFINITION OF ON-DUTY TIME
On-duty time Includes any time in CMV except sleeper-berth. Does not include any time resting in a parked CMV. In moving CMV, does not include up to 2 hrs. in passenger seat immediately before or after 8 consecutive hrs. in sleeper-berth.

So the only time you need sleeper birth is if you try to run team hot shot, correct? or you need to stop at a motel.

Plan is going a diffrent path I'm thinking of getting a tandem class 8 tractor and hiring a driver and working for Mercer or another company who uses o/ops with Mercer they say I get 75% their trailer or mine . Not so much wanting to hot shot anymore Whould this work ? Presently I'm still employed in construction so I'm trying to get this up and running in the meantime the wife has a job so its not so much that it has to provide all the income for us just as much to pay the driver well and pay the rest of the costs if I only get couple hundred a week that's ok and hopefully I keep my job in meantime and work on getting another truck and driver after a year or so

I'd do this if YOU were planning to drive, but to start out with someone else driving it and you're not experienced in this, it could be a financial disaster very quickly.

Yes I understand it is risky and getting the right driver and keeping him/her happy is key to the plan I appreciate your not sugar coating it but I feel we can do this if proper planning and time is taken

Cool, I didn't want you to think I was bashing you, just want to make sure that things go right for you. I see too many think they'll jump in and make it big quick and they're gone in six months.
