It is very difficult for new owners to survive when they don't have any experience, especially when they put a driver in their truck. A good driver can make you money, but a bad one can break you very quickly. I recall one who leased to a major carrier. He was young and didn't have any experience. He almost lost his shirt. It was difficult for him to find good drivers who were willing to work for someone so young and inexperienced. It was very easy to take advantage of him.

Would you be able to survive and keep the truck if you didn't have a driver? There are a number of carriers that will help you find drivers, but some don't check out new drivers as well as you may want. Mercer is a good carrier. I know owners who have leased to Landstar and CRST Malone and done well. There are other carriers that I could recommend, but it depends on the type of freight you want to haul. Carriers will look at the experience and record of any driver that you may want to put in the truck. You can't just lease to a carrier, put a driver in it and forget about your investment. If the driver breaks down in the middle of the night, you will be the one who gets the call and he will expect you to get someone out to fix the truck. Unless you actually run the truck yourself, you will be relying on a driver that you know nothing about to take care of your investment and to be honest and truthful. That is not always the case. When you own trucks they are not always moving. It can take weeks or months before you find a qualified driver. Expenses go on whether the truck is moving or not. What if your truck has a major breakdown. Could you afford to have it repaired and pay the driver while he is waiting on parts or repairs to be made? There could also be motel bills for the down time.

While speaking to my wife's uncle who has been a trucker for 30 years he says he would like to drive for me he said we should do what he used to do earlier in his career and haul produce fr. om california with a reefer trailer . This sounds like a great idea to me to have a driver and a mentor as well ! He says he would haul a light load out like plastic ,t shirts or furniture out and then produce back any thoughts on this idea ?

It can be tricky working with family. It can also be difficult to have a driver working for you, especially when you are inexperienced and the older driver has many years experience. Tread lightly.

Hauling produce, furniture etc, is a whole lot different than hauling cars.
