Then I say go for it ! Like I said it's all opinion. Some based on experience or prejudiced but still an opinion.

I'm neutral on brand and think they are both good trucks but it really comes down to the individual truck ...I've seen trucks of both makes that were pounded to piss way before they're time .

Drive them. Turn the water hose on them to check for leaks. For an extra $20k that Pete better be LOTS nicer.

And I agree about looking for a '99

NotNothing wrong with thethe classic. But the 379 is by far the better built truck. Just like when the tire salesman says these are just as good as Michelin. I may as well pay the extra and not have to worry about being as good as.

I'd be a lot more concerned about the condition of that million mile moter than I would about whether it had a red oval on the steering wheel or not ..get an oil sample and shy away from anything that saw time in the oilfield !

I disagree completely with this. For me it was about a quality built truck. I understand that the Pete you drove was out of the oilfield which in my opinion is only a step above being a log truck as for as conditions go.
There is a quality difference. Not saying that every 99 Pete is better than every 99 Freightliner. The buyer has to decide if that difference in quality will outweigh the difference in cost. I wouldn't be stuck on these 2 trucks he first posted so the 20k difference is out the window anyway. I would keep looking. My first truck was a 95 GMC White Volvo. Wasn't very comfortable but did the job well enough.
To me it's Kinda like living in a mobile home or a custom built home. Both can be lived in comfortably and both will do the intended purpose. And I have lived in mobile homes way more than the custom built home we recently built, but giving your choice, which one would you pick?
And looking cool is just an added benefit.

A 16 year old pete is in the prime of its life, if well taken care of.
