There is no way around a traffic control device no matter how you look at it. Even if safety and common sense prevail, you are still in the wrong.
Left lane truck restrictions were made by 4 wheelers for 4 wheelers because some dumb 80,000 lb truck driver thought he could pass on a hill. Hence, all 4 wheelers think all trucks perform the same.
I don't agree with the restriction on flat ground areas. It forces less aggressive 4 wheelers out in the restricted lane with aggressive drivers and aggressive truck drivers are contained like a mad bumble bee passing on the right and such. I have had instances on the Hotlanta 500 where a 55 mph truck driver beside me was coming up on a 35 mph vehicle in the right lane. I have stepped over to 3rd lane to let him over versus him slamming his brakes on. I also in the same situation like a cop on the shoulder I will do the same thing and they won't say a word. Common sense and safety. If they think I need a ticket, so be it.

I appreciate all of your responses...but to address a few...this guy was legit and I followed his argument. It has been quite some time back, I may be mistaken but it seems to me that the strategy he used had to do with Federal regulations (or lack thereof) trumping local ordinances on Federal roads. My situation was in another state and the whole process will be fully documented (court proceedings videoed or at least recorded as I intend to have this dismissed all together. Now I know I raised some eyebrows with that last statement, but this is coming from a guy that had a 73 in a 60 adjudicated in this same state. These things ARE possible!

I read the signs ok, but i passed this car, was in left lane , no signs, i spotted tthe sign two miles up , seen a onramp , good too get back in , just as i was moving over ,a car came off that ramp, not yeilding, almost smack the truck , got it back over, just in time, and now in the no man lane , so i just put the brakes on and let both cars pass, now i woulda been allright , ecept for second car cut me off, i blam no one this but my own fault and coulda got a ticket and thats what i would i woulda told the judge too and just payed the fine, but thats gets me too thinking, becuse as trucker, they want you too apear in court, i just ask if i can mail them in, i was just wondering that too, be long road trip in car if you have too apear, Everett.

Here in Iowa, it's the law you have too get over for all policeman and emergancy cars on shoulder, so would i get a ticket, i dont think so, because its the law,

A guy I worked with got a ticket on the north side of Indianapolis on 465 for that very thing. 865 west is a left hand exit off of 465. He got over 2 miles before the lane actually exited and got a ticket. Cop told him he wasn't supposed to be over there until he got to the sign that says "this lane exit only" or whatever it reads. He went to court and the judge threw it out because it was an exit lane. BTW the ticket would have been almost $500!

Third lane, schmird lane.
As long as you do your business out there (in other words, pass and get back over), you won't have a problem. I've had state troopers be right behind me when I got out there and passed, and they just went on by.
Nobody has any cojones anymore.groundpounder Thanks this. -
Same thing goin on in St Louis. The entire left shoulder plastered with No Trucks Left Lane signs while your trying to get over for a left-lane exit. Good times.
